What is the end game for the Steelers here? They aren't winning a Super Bowl with Russ under center. They may be good enough to eke out a winning record next season. What's the point of going hovering around 8-9 wins and be a one and done in the postseason.

Does Tomlin really believe that the Russ he'd be getting (mediocre with flashes of brilliance) would really put the Steelers over the top?

It would make more sense to play Pickett/Rudolph and get a QB in 2025 with hopefully a top 5 pick.

Steelers have built up enough goodwill to suck for a season of two to secure their QB of the future.
Getting Russ for a year while figuring that out only helps them in the end. Trying to figure out your next moves with Kenny Pickett playing like trash ain’t the move. If the defense can give you anything close to what they gave last year, and Russ plays like he can and don’t do too much, this might be a great year for them. The NFL is so crazy these day, you can be in the Super Bowl one year and trash the next.

The positives around Russ is that you're basically getting him for free. Even if he sucks its not a big deal because your other QB's sucked too.... WITH THAT SAID. People aren't going to like this suggestion but if the Steelers can draft a guy.. Taking a look at Spencer rattler and drafting him if he's available in the later rounds might not be a bad idea imo

You get to hide him for a year and having russ there to mentor him, teach him how to study game tape, teach him how to prepare for games etc as a player who also was a later round draft pick himself isn't the worst idea.

*runs from the chat before my mentions get filled with people telling me I'm crazy*

Another option is trading down in this draft to see if you can get enough draft picks to possibly trade up next year and get Sanders

Actually this is a good idea. Also spencer rattler is criminally underrated to me

End goal? Super Bowl.
Sure Russ aint a top-5 QB, but this roster (especially the defense) is good enough that you do not need spectacular QB play. All you need is competent QB-play, and that is something we haven't had in 3 years.

I consider this move similar to Peyton's last year in Denver- aging, yet still-productive QB and a stellar defense.

Sucking to secure the future:
We had some of the worst QB play last year and still went 10-7 and made the playoffs. Mike Tomlin led teams do not tank. So it is unrealistic to assume that the team was somehow going to have a top-5 pick in 2025.

Naw this is exactly what (I think) they are looking to do. Draft a potential QB-in-waiting (Rattler, Milton).

They tried to do this when Big Ben was still on the team, but he was incredibly sensitive and would threaten to retire anytime the team discussed 'succession planning'.

So clueless. A playoff team that made it to the playoffs with a bum QB isn't trash. This is a huge improvement. Russ might not be the same, but he doesn't suck like people think he does. Denver is a circus.

Have faith in an older Russ, Struggle Cuts II, and Arthur Smith as OC. :skip:

Your post is informative and insightful. I very much agree with it.

Good for Russ, the haters are in shambles talking about "Nobody going to pick him up, he's going to be a back up". Stop. Denver had way more problems than Russ. Coaching is why that team was a mess but they put it on Russ like he was the main problem. Plus Russ still walk away with the huge bag and is getting the bag again next year despite playing for the Steelers. Mike Tomlin will also respect Russ and not disrespect him like that ego maniac Sean Payton. All they got to do is run the ball, play good defense and let Russ do his thing. I expect the Steelers to have a good season next year.

NFL brehs, fill me in

Does this out pressure on Mike Tomlin to make a run at the Superbowl ? I hear people talking shyt about how he's overrated because he won his 1 titles with an inherited team from the previous GM/Coach

I don't know why Mike Tomlin would do this to his career.

The Steelers fan are very passionate. The first game Russ missing wide open slants in the end zone they gonna be calling for everyone head.
