Theres a chart above that shows the house show attendance with each champion. Eddie Guerrero is dead last. By what you say that means Jinder Mahal was more over than Eddie Guerrero.
And the internet this minor figure had Punk as the second biggest merch seller behind Cena and at one point beating Cena. It sounds like you mean that Cena drew more money. Sure, kids (their parents) are the big spenders but Punk was A) Never featured the way Cena was even in his LONG title reign (Cena was still main event most times for that) and B) Never supposed to see a true main event spot. The fact that he did is because of how over he was.
I know Roman is gonna tow the company line especially with Punk going to AEW but there has always been this silly narrative to belittle Punk's time and influence on the business. Probably because he is an a$$hole. But you really cant deny the man. He was high level throughout his time there
That's not what I'm saying at all.
It's like when it comes to Punk no one can say shyt about him because people get so fukking defensive. He was compared to the n°2 or 3 in company history (Rock) and the n°4 or 5 guy (Cena). Punk is not on that level. And I'm not talking about making money, I'm talking about being over, about getting a fukking reaction from the crowd.
People lost their shyt with Cena for years. Whether it was young people, women and parents loving him, or the rest booing him (out of hatred to the company, to him or later just to play along, mostly), he got a huge reaction every damn show and house show. Being over is not just getting cheered. If that was the case then no popular heel has ever been over big.
Punk wasn't on that level, nobody was during a 5-7 year period, let alone for the amount of time Cena was.
Saying Punk was not as over as Cena is not news. Denying that is legit mind blowing to me. That doesn't mean Punk wasn't very fukking popular, influential and became a legit star in spite of the company he worked for.
