I mean, it was not. MITB 2011 didn't do big numbers and it certainly didn't touch Cena's run of PPV and house show main eventing in the mid to late 00's. There was no change in narrative, as it happens with every wrestler as heavily featured as Cena, fans just grew fonder of him.

The internet is a minority when you take into account that they don't go to house shows and scream for the main star, they certainly weren't doing it in Cena's peak.

Theres a chart above that shows the house show attendance with each champion. Eddie Guerrero is dead last. By what you say that means Jinder Mahal was more over than Eddie Guerrero.

And the internet this minor figure had Punk as the second biggest merch seller behind Cena and at one point beating Cena. It sounds like you mean that Cena drew more money. Sure, kids (their parents) are the big spenders but Punk was A) Never featured the way Cena was even in his LONG title reign (Cena was still main event most times for that) and B) Never supposed to see a true main event spot. The fact that he did is because of how over he was.

I know Roman is gonna tow the company line especially with Punk going to AEW but there has always been this silly narrative to belittle Punk's time and influence on the business. Probably because he is an a$$hole. But you really cant deny the man. He was high level throughout his time there
