Here's what bugs me out about studios: You initially pick a director because you're sold on their vision and it melds with yours. They hired him because he was in-line with what they wanted to do. THR is saying he walked because his vision had a bit more edge than they liked. Isn't that something you'd know beforehand? Or is it that really just something you'd see when the script pages come in?

once the preproduction starts and the set ideas and filming locations and cgi and budget start getting thrown around ... the differences start. .. ALA deadpool 2

I've always been of the mind that studios and networks know what they want from the very beginning, and all they're looking for is a steward who:

A. Has a vision similar enough to the one the studio had from the outset, or

B. Is "weak" enough to have their vision hammered and beaten into the shape that the studio will be comfortable with.

Knowing nothing about this situation, but seeing the outcome, I would guess this situation was more B than A.

They probably saw Rick as someone who'd be grateful enough with the shot to have his original vision moulded into their image, and when he bucked, they bucked back, and now they've "mutually parted ways".
yup. Same thing w/ marvel and ava duvernay.

And the other directors who complained after the fact

Pretty much, it looks like with the studios they have no idea what "direction" or "tone" they want for these comic book films until the director starts bringing in their own vision and ideas for the film. It's why Marvel is constantly using lesser know directors. :yeshrug:
