Isiah Thomas back in the 70s too.
Hoop Dreams kind of talks about this.
Both William Gates and Arthur Agee got partial scholarships to the private school that Isiah had went to. There was a scout in the playground that discovered Agee.
Gates was doing well in basketball, and a benefactor covered all his tuition costs. Agee was struggling in basketball and hadn’t grown yet, and got kicked out of school for not paying tuition. No benefactor to help him.
That was a huge part of the movie.
William matured faster physically and was ready to start as a freshman. A breh that's 5'10", 6'0" at best with the ability to start for a storied program like that.....you gotta be a baller.
What's crazy is I almost think Arthur would have been better off at St. Joe's while William would have been better at a hood school.
At the hood school.....William would have avoided the business side of athletics a bit longer and kept his passion for the game. Arthur with more structure, could have hit his stride earlier than he did. William was more mature/disciplined and didn't need the rigid structure as much whereas Arthur might have been better off getting that earlier. Marshall coach was really good though, so there's that.
