Breh, for the last time breathable =/= no contagions. Air containing small pox was breathable, how did that turn out for people? 300 million people dead in the 20th Century alone, more if we go further back.

And that was here....they were on another planet half way across the galaxy. Even if you could say "well, he ran tests on the air"....tests against what? They had no idea what they were dealing with.
