The signs are pointing to quarterback Alex Smith making his 27th straight start when the 49ers host the Bears on Monday night.
Speaking on ESPN this morning, Adam Schefter said (The 49ers) feel pretty good that Smith should be able to go.
That nugget of news came two days after Jim Harbaugh indicated Smiths post-concussion symptoms were at least subsiding after he experienced blurred vision in the first half of Sundays 24-24 tie against the Rams. Harbaugh said Smith was doing much better and his symptoms were positive after he was apparently injured on a quarterback sneak early in the second quarter.
Smith, who visited an independent neurologist Monday afternoon, must be cleared medically and participate in a practice before he can play against Chicago. The 49ers, who were off Monday and Tuesday, will return to practice at 2:15 today. Its not clear if Smith will speak to the media following practice.
Last year, Smith played the week after sustaining a concussion in a Week 2 loss against Dallas. Smith, who wasnt diagnosed with the injury until after the game, completed 20 of 30 passes for 201 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in a 13-8 win at Cincinnati the next week.
If Smith is unable to play Monday, Colin Kaepernick will get his first career start. Kaepernick finished with a flourish after relieving Smith against St. Louis, completing 9 of his final 10 passes for 103 yards and leading an 11-play touchdown drive he capped with a seven-yard run. In his first three series, the 49ers had three punts and Kaepernick completed 2 of 7 passes.
Kaepernicks late-game performance has inspired some whispers of a quarterback controversy among the fan base, assuming he can replicate it against a stingy defense in Chicago. Kaepernick, who had 66 yards on eight carries, has intriguing skills, but his future isnt now.
Its worth noting Smith has completed 26 of his past 28 passes for 307 yards with four touchdowns, no interceptions and a 151.9 rating.
Regardless of whether Smith plays Monday, a quarterback controversy will have to wait until 2013, at the earliest
