In some states the law you're saying they can't pass already exist. The problem is when that law was passed they said ok we'll just invent fees to drive the price back up to where we want it. From there they lobby to keep the government off their ass.

The fact that you're right in that these people don't have to go this route doesn't make me wrong in saying that the government shouldn't allow businesses who's whole objective it to exploit poor people to go unchecked.

Rent-A-Center doesn't exist to make poor people's lives better or easier. Rent-A-Center doesn't even want you to pay that item off. They wanna repo it and re-lease it to many more people repeating the cycle. You've likely already paid what the item cost them anyway at the point of them repossessing it. That's why the harassment happens. You're a few days late on a payment, ya know because you're poor and shyt happens, and they start blowing up your phone, calling your family / friends, and waiting outside your house with a truck. All stuff that if they were in the financial industry proper they couldn't get away with like they do.
fine. until you give examples of things rent a center provides that cant be bought at other retailers, or bought used off craigslist, or (stretch here) not bought at all, and customers "have" to live without certain size TVs....im sorry, i dont think you have a case here that's worth government getting involved

let me know how it goes petitioning your congressman :jaymelo:

Rent-to-own customers face high costs, harassment, few protections
If you can read that article and tell me what these companies are doing is ok you're emotionless.

Mofos use lobbying to keep their con game legal. They dance around laws financial institutions have to answer to.
i wish they would go out of business, but people still keep going to them. they're either providing a necessary service or they need to be gone from society. it can't be both. you can't argue woe is the poor consumer with bad credit that needs an LG washer and dryer while also saying they shouldn't exist because the only kind of company that would allow a poor consumer with bad credit to own a new LG washer and dryer on credit is a shady one. it's a rip off in general, it might be less of a rip off in some states, but still a ripoff.

"People view them as a Best Buy for people who have no credit or bad credit. It's not one step away from Best Buy. It's blocks away." people need to view craigslist (and offerup and letgo) as the Best Buy for people who have no credit or bad credit.

that article starts off with something i would say is a false premise to begin with.

"If you need a new washer and dryer and don't have the cash or the credit to buy them, you might choose to try rent-to-own."

first off no one NEEDS a washer and dryer, it's a convenience and you can go to a laundry mat if you don't have one. and second it doesn't need to be new or name-brand. give me a good reason other than consumerism run amok. i just don't understand the desire to go into these stores in the first place and sign up for non-essential items in such a hasty manner. look at this shyt "Rent-A-Center markets its business model as a hassle-free way to have name-brand furniture and appliances." the obsession with name-brand is the root cause. once you have that then the wolves figure out a way to target it.

Why would anyone rent-to-own?

I agree with this:

Although customers may understand the cost is high, many don’t understand exactly how high or appreciate how rent-to-own — like payday loans, auto title loans and other products that target low-income consumers — can erode their financial well-being, says economist Signe-Mary McKernan, an expert on wealth-building and poverty for the Urban Institute, an economic and social policy think tank.

McKernan thinks the solution lies not in regulating these businesses out of existence, but helping low-income families get in the habit of saving despite the obstacles. She encourages people to make savings automatic, look for low-fee bank accounts and learn about asset limits for benefit programs like food assistance, since those may be higher than people think.

“The idea is to make it easier to create savings so they need these products less,” McKernan says.

and you'd have to be shockingly stupid to pay that without knowing how to surf the internet to compare prices in 2018. either that, or the payment plan actually works for you, and would be roughly the same as putting it on a credit card anyway

im just curious what the law would say that you propose writing. i have no interest in defending a piece of shyt business like rent a center, but we can't legislate everything
You do know a lot of people in poverty don’t have access to the internet, you entitled prick?

I figured implying Hillary is a lesbian and Huma is her lover and Trump is a "businessman" would break the obvious sarcasm barrier but I guess not.
