I think the NBA product is just better now. So many starting QB out, and those games just turn into trash. But an NBA game without the best player playing is still a great game a lot of the time.

I don’t have a dog in the fight but I hope yall nikkas quick to dismiss ratings when it’s NFL vs. NBA not the same ones with your chest out shytting on women’s sports and nobody supposedly watching.
All of a sudden when it comes to women’s sports nikkas love bringing up them ratings. But if NBA viewership is going down or beat by something else then its “why do y’all care anyway? :mjcry:

If Chet Holmgren and all the shyt dude is pulling off right now who additionally has a hilarious Twitter account ain't moving the needle, then that tells you what you need to know about the majority of this country's opinions about the NBA. Most people in America want to see Josh Allen truck somebody, not Luka hit step backs.

Although most people recognize the individual skills to do what some players do with the basketball, the sport itself is too "compact" and isn't grand enough compared to the open field stadium setting playing against elements.

The overall culture around football basically captures America. Big crowds watching collisions and beer.

"Disrespecting Atlanta" :pachaha::russ:

You can't bring that energy to a basketball game, it don't work the same :heh: :mjlol:

Christmas is on a Wednesday (leap year) next year. It won't happen again for another 5 years.

NFL is already in talks to still have a game next year, and change schedules to compensate for it.

There hasn't been a Christmas NBA game regular people cared about it years, plus the general disinterest in watching (versus talking about) basketball made this inevitable.

A real sports fan doesn't care about ratings.

The only thing that matters is the game being played. This rating debate is a political talking point used by old boomers and white conservatives (over the last few years) to shyt on the NBA and basketball in general, kinda goes back to the days when Black players in the NBA were becoming more prominent in the 70s which led to viewership and ratings dropping.

Outside of league executives, ownership, etc, I can't see how any fan would care so much about sports ratings when it has no input on the outcome of a game being played or which team wins.

Don't become like those fans who stan music artists because of streaming numbers rather than the actual quality of the artist's music. High streaming numbers and ratings don't mean the product itself is good or that low ratings/numbers is an indication of a product being bad.

The NFL might skip next year since Christmas is on Wednesday.

But they will definitely be back the year after

Black people in America ain't checking for the NFL?
Basketball is more popular among Black people than the NFL not just from a fan perspective but culturally.

Both leagues are majority Black but the NBA/basketball period is much more synonymous with Black culture and Blackness in general.

Those Knicks-Bulls, Sonics-Rockets type Christmas games used to be such a contrast in styles...and the league would actually market the "physical" Eastern conference wars and the "fast paced" West track meets for its audience.

Everybody is tuning in to watch Barkley vs. Kemp. Jordan-Ewing.

As much as @Rhakim and @HandyWithTheSteel bust nuts over themselves about how the NBA right now has the most skill playing at it's highest level...that shyt doesn't resonate. Nobody gives a f*ck.

That doesn't mean we're not watching football. It's like saying black people don't check for Malcolm because more of us checked for Martin

I think there's more than 1 style, but some of those styles are tough to watch.

you could have the two most interesting teams on and it would turn into how can the Lakers or Knicks get them.

It's about the transactions. NBA fans are tribal about the player, not the team. Football fans think being a fan of the opposition is reason enough to commit acts of violence.

Of course we watch football but, it's not as popular culturally.

The NFL lost a percentage, not a big percentage but still in all a percent of Black fans over the years, especially in between and after the Kaepernick saga.

The NFL may have a majority Black league but culturally they're synonymous with whiteness.

The issue boils down to importance and meaning. At a time when we essentially have every type of media available to us at all times, people are going to prioritize watching things they feel has value or immediate importance. NFL games in December have playoff implications, pretty much every game played on Christmas had importance and meaning to a large portion of the audience.

The NBA has gone the complete opposite direction. For years everyone from the organizations, to media, down to the players have been telling us the regular season doesnt matter. At the end of the day if you tell me this product is irrelevant, then why would you expect me to watch it? Especially when you are now going up against a product that is selling the importance of each of their games?
