So the NFL outdrew the NBA by a 6:1 ratio, on a day broadcasters would consider optimal viewing due to no competition and a captive audience--with a similar product no less ("marquee regular season matchups"). 35 million total combined eyes between the 2 leagues.

After 20 years of arguing ratings on this borad, I will just say:
It is Adam Silver's job to capture the eyes of whatever percentage of the 30 million people that watched the NFL on Christmas and have a basketball hoop in their driveway instead of a field goal post.

As lopsided as the ratings were for the NFL compared to the NBA, it’s even more frightening when you realize that the NBA ratings this Christmas CRATERED, even compared to last year:

According to NBC Sports, the Celtics-Lakers rating is 18 % LOWER than last years Bucks-Celtics game in the same time slot. The 76ers-Heat rating is 73% LOWER than Grizzlies-Warriors in that same time slot last year. That’s terrifying for the NBA. How did they lose so many viewers THIS YEAR?? Silver really dropped the ball with these wack ass Christmas Day games. Bucks-Celtics, and Grizzlies-Warriors were heated playoffs matchups the previous year. There were NO playoff rematches this Christmas. Why would casuals care about Bucks-Knicks or Warriors-Nuggets, when there isn’t any recent playoff history or bad blood?

I mean, those households watched football. Because football is more popular

I mean if the NBA was the NFA (National Football Association), then there would be cause for concern. As it stands right now, the NBA is still the top basketball league in this country and the world. Talent will always be there and as for ratings, they get the demos they want most nights when they're not up against the NFL. This doom & gloom is crazy...the NBA isn't in danger of folding

There was an NFL Christmas Tripleheader last year too. The NBA did a LOT better last year compared to this year. When you’re seeing 50% drops in ratings compared to a year ago, that’s a BIG problem. The matchups chosen for this year’s slate absolutely SUCKED. No Finals rematch, no playoff rematch from any series last year, just blah across the board. It’s like they surrendered the day completely when they found out that the NFL was going to schedule games again for Christmas this year. If we got 76ers-Celtics, or Grizzlies-Lakers, that would’ve made the day a lot better from an interest standpoint. You need either rivalry games or bad blood games at this point to generate any interest. No one cares about Bucks-Knicks, an over the hill Warriors team against the NBA champs or about this version of Celtics-Lakers.

Grizzlies/Lakers?

I highly doubt the league wanted to give Ja Morant center stage so soon after coming back from a 25 game suspension on a bad Grizzlies team.

That and the main antagonist (Brooks) isn't there anymore-- which also kinda highlights the problem. Dillon Brooks had issues with LeBron, not the Grizzlies and the Lakers.

NFL stans and bitter cats who want the old days back for the NBA who consistently do the cheerleading for the NFL rating.

It’s not a concern:
Conversations around TV ratings is another example of how corporations and the right wing won America. This shouldn’t matter to anyone who don’t have financial investments in these matters, but it’s some how important fan content. It’s bizarre until you understand that a lot of people are passionate about companies succeeding just as much as their favorite teams.

What does this have to do with politics. This board is proudly pro NBA to the point where they refuse to sticky Football threads

Yeah, the NBA is "doing just fine" and its lost 70% of its viewership since Jordan retired and 50% of its viewership in the last decade.

It can't even pull more than 5 million viewers for its marquee Christmas games anymore.

Celtics vs Lakers and Nuggets vs Warriors should be doing way more than 5 mil and 4.1 mil viewers respectively.

In 2010 for example, we had Heat vs Lakers doing 13.11 mil viewers. In 2011, Bulls vs Lakers did 11.01 mil viewers.

Forget comparing the NBA to the NFL. Compare the NBA to itself.

The NBA has serious problems it has to address before it just fades away completely to irrelevancy. A lot of the NBA's problems are also self-inflicted wounds.
The NBA is the biggest, richest, and best basketball league on the planet and is broadcast in over 200+ countries breh. It's beyond doing well.

NFL $18 billion in revenue a year
NBA $10 billion in revenue a year

Just because the NFL is king in good Ole America, gets ratings, and whites talk down on the NBA that the league is doing horribly and is fukked. This is far from the case breh. The NBA and the EPL are global beasts. The NFL just has America on lock and the best TV contracts in sports.

The NBA has always been matchup dependent, for better or worse.

The Heat-Lakers game for example was one of the most hyped up regular season games ever because it was the first meeting between the Miami Big 3 and Kobe/Pau Lakers who were fresh off a title. Everyone thought it was an early Finals preview

There were four other games on that day and none came close to 13m views

It has everything to do with politics. TV ratings have nothing to do with us but a lot of you care because corporate affairs is now your interest.
