i just finished putting all this stuff together and surprisingly Windows 8 booted to a semi-install screen then ran as if it was business as usual.

i remember if you put the hard drive with Windows on it in a PC that was different than it was installed on it used to just blue screen.

of course i can't keep this version of Windows 8 anymore cause its 32-bit and not on the solid state drive but its nice to know you can swap systems and keep an install.

The 5770 can still hold its own tho...I would have kept that and just waited to see what these new consoles drop with and how nvidia/amd responds.

what a nightmare. Windows 8 decides to deactivate itself due to the new system so it had to renew the key which involved calling up Microsoft and entering a 54 digit number over the phone then getting a 54 digit number in return from them and entering it in Windows so it can activate on the old key.

i'm also locked out of 64-bit Windows. the upgrade adviser won't let you choose what edition of Windows to install so since i came from Windows 7 32-bit it will only download Windows 8 32-bit. i have the 64-bit edition of Windows 8 on my Netbook and copied the download over to the new Desktop and tried to run it and i guess it knows it was downloaded on that Netbook cause it is blocking itself from running. now i gotta figure out how to switch to 64-bit Windows.

So this thread got me thinking of what kind of budget build I can put together for the coli @ about $300 (Without Windows) and run pretty much any game at medium/high.

time to get to work

Any help would be appreciated...I want a monthly $300 build to encourage those to jump in

unless you already have most of the components $300 seems like that's way to low to build anything worthwhile.

nah it can be done
you'd probably need the guts of a current system. ram and a power supply are gonna push $100 alone and that's without a case, hard drive, motherboard, or graphics card.

hell whatever you could build for $300 isn't gonna last too long before its outdated and needs to be replaced. probably $200 more and it'll last a few years.

Incorrect, you can get 4GB Ram and a PSU for < 50.

Pixxo PL Series PL-500RPG 500W Power Supply - ATX, SATA and PCI-Express Ready, 80mm Cooling Fan, Short Circuit Protection at TigerDirect.com
SPECTEK ST4G3D1339 4GB Desktop Memory Module - DDR3, 1333 MT/s, PC3-10600, CL9, 240pin, UDIMM at TigerDirect.com

You can definitely build something reasonable for $300, but you'll have to rock onboard graphics and a lower end CPU obviously.

$335 right now. I would have to find some more areas I can cut. I can cut $10 off that motherboard, but lose USB 3.0 and SATA III :sadcam:

This will run BF3 on High

Yeah, I'd say for a box you plan on gaming on, that's about as cheap as you can go.

When I was talking about going under $300 I meant with integrated graphics - considering you need a GPU, I'd say you got the cost down about as much as you can. :damn:

you can save $1 on the CPU
$10 on the motherboard but lose USB 3.0 and SATA III
Save a couple of dollars by going with a 500GB HDD
Go with 4GB instead of 8GB RAM (I don't recommend this)

it can definitely be done, but NEVER COMPROMISE...NEVER :damn:

tho if you make the cuts to the hard drive, the motherboard, and even the processor you might be able to shoehorn a cheap 30gb ssd in there to boot fast. I think $350 would get it done in that case. It depends on what you want at the end of the day.

Buy the newegg items through ebates and get an additional $5 back (getting it down to $330) :youngsabo:

Like you said, depends on what you want, but I wouldn't be too cheap with a gaming computer.

The box I'm on right now only cost me about $300 to build and I have a 64GB SSD with my OS on it (whenever the computer boots I'm like :takedat: ), but I didn't bother with a graphics card since I'm not a PC gamer. Plus I already had a spare keyboard/mouse/speakers and some old hard drives.

If I ever do decide to game I'll probably throw another 4GB stick in and find a decent GPU. :ehh:
