I just put together a build for a bit over $300 and you are still saying no?

You are overpaying for that processor btw
honestly though how many quality parts can you get for $300? a good power supply and a mediocre graphics card will will destroy that budget and force you to have to cheap out on the processor and mobo. that's a short term build at $300 and that's maybe buying used parts that you can't even vouch for who did what to them.

my last build from 2009 was probably like $650 and i cut corners on everything but the processor, mobo, and graphics card which were the Q9550, P35 Neo FR2, and 5770.

btw that Q9550 is going for like $125+ on eBay right now
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2 83 GHz Quad Core BX80569Q9550 Processor 0735858197380 | eBay
i'm probably gonna list mines on there and if it sells for that it will be approaching me getting back almost half what i paid for it approaching 3.2 years after buying it. i just sold that 5770 for $55 also approaching half of what i paid for it.

if you spend the money for the better system up front you can dump the parts in a few years and roll that over into your next system and have had a better system for it rather than spend $300 on components that will be dated very quickly.

if you bit the bullet back in its day (2006/7) and bought an 8800 gts you're just now almost hitting about the minimum requirements to run a game like Max Payne 3. that's 5-6 years off that card for what was probably $300 or so back then and at that time you'd have enjoyed being in the upper echelon of performance for a time.

Wow my thread took a turn lol, I agree a 300 build is building short term. Unless you have parts from a old computer that you are going to reuse. You have to cheap out an buy low quality parts that may fail and/or will have to upgrade soon. My build for 650 includes everything and it will last a few yrs without me upgrading it.

no its not...just need to make sure you get a solid motherboard to keep it going strong.

You reach a certain price point in where getting a certain part does not even make sense anymore...ESPECIALLY now when the new console cycle about to be refreshed.

You guys are new to this game I see :myman:

Building a PC right now for $800+ is a mistake IMO because we have no idea what the next gen is going to bring us. The solid things you need to focus on are the motherboard and get a decent amount of RAM. A nice size HDD and a solid SSD would be nice also. A solid psu and a mid to high grade card will run everything at max or near max @ 1080P for the next year+ on $300 hardware. I hate to say it to you guys, but spend your money a bit wiser. If I put together that build today and put in the extra $500 shortly after the next gen of consoles are released I bet my system will bench most of yours given the price spent...this is an expensive game if you don't know how to read the market correctly. Spending close to 1K at this point is just dikk measuring right now...its not needed.

I see what are saying but look at my build that I'm still tweaking for full build (I'm not reusing any parts) how can I do better? I'm not trying for the cheapest possible build. If that was the the case I would forgo USB 3.0, No SSD drive, smaller HD, cheaper cpu and a cheap no frills case. Plus this is not just a gaming machine it is a work computer also. So the extra cores will help with multitasking.

There's really no point getting a mediocre graphics card.

If you're on a budget your best bet is to forgo a graphics card altogether and just use integrated graphics, and then just buy a good graphics card later when you have $$$.

A cheap GPU will barely be better than onboard anyway so it's a waste of money IMO. But if you don't buy a graphics card you can easily build something decent for $300-$400.

motherboard? by the time the next generation of consoles is released they're gonna change the sockets on new processors anyway so that becomes obsolete.

as for the next generation of consoles do you honestly think they're going to have graphics cards even as powerful as a ($239) GTX 660 in them?

the next generation of consoles are rumored to be using re-branded versions of this as their graphics card
[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-HD6670-PCI-Express-Video/dp/B005HH35KS]Amazon.com: Sapphire Radeon HD6670 1 GB DDR3 VGA/DVI/HDMI PCI-Express Video Card - 100326DDR3L: Electronics[/ame]

that card is not even on the level of a 5770 HD that i bought back in 2009. the PC i built today is gonna have better specs than any console that's coming out in 2013-14.

its tough to say. Your argument about socket change further proves my point. Grab a micro ATX board with usb 3.0, sata III, and a PCI Express 3.0 slot for about $50 and you are good to go with the motherboard unless something crazy happens with the next consoles. Trust that if you slowly work your way up to a current high level i7 processor you will be fine...a CELERON right now runs battlefield 3...just think about that.

Also, tough to compare console graphic chipsets with pc cards as games are made on the consoles first (outside of a generation shift like right now). Porting it over to a pc usually means higher requirements for us since games are not greatly optimized...like GTA IV :aicmon:

How Far Have AMD & Intel Integrated Graphics Come Since 2006? - Integrated Graphics Showdown! - Legit Reviews

Integrated graphics have gotten way better in the last five years or so to the point where a cheap ass graphics card (under $99) isn't really any better.
Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart : Best Graphics Cards For The Money: December 2012
Intel's current integrated graphics solution is at the level of a 6800 Ultra a top of the line graphics card... from 2004.

there's always a socket change on the horizon. always something better coming.
we're in the tech world man the moment something hits retail shelves its already outdated and 6-7 months later will be replaced.

yeah consoles are closed box but are we really gonna act like they're gonna hit and blow something like Crysis 3 outta the water when that's more than likely their target?
Buy Crysis 3
if you meet the recommended specs for Crysis 3 you should be good for the early part of the next generation.
RECOMMENDED SYSTEM OPERATING REQUIREMENTS FOR PC:
• Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
• DirectX 11 graphics card with 1GB Video RAM
• Quad core CPU
• 4GB Memory
Example 1 (Nvidia/Intel):
• Nvidia GTX 560
• Intel Core i3-530
Example 2 (AMD):
• AMD Radeon HD5870
• AMD Phenom II X2 565

HI-PERFORMANCE PC SPECIFICATIONS:
• Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
• Latest DirectX 11 graphics card
• Latest quad core CPU
• 8GB Memory
Example 1 (Nvidia/Intel):
• NVidia GTX 680
• Intel Core i7-2600k
Example 2 (AMD):
• AMD Radeon HD7970
• AMD Bulldozer FX4150
i really don't wanna throw a borderline $500 graphics card in the PC to meet the HI specs.

Well of course it's not going to be as good as a decent current graphics card. Point is, it's more than enough if you're not gaming or only going to be doing low end gaming. If I was on a budget and wasn't trying to game I'd probably go with integrated.

BTW, AMD>Intel when it comes to integrated graphics.

my $300 build will run Far Cry 3 fine...not highest quality, but will still shyt on the console versions.
