Nurse, if we are being real, has some fatal flaws as a coach. Those things showed up in bright neon lights this year. Ultimately, the Raptors organization has always been about internal development under Masai and Nurse failed at developing any of our players over the last two years. Everyone regressed this season, the play style was ugly, the defensive scheme was nonsensical, the offence was iso-centric despite having poor isolation players, minutes were mismanaged on almost a nightly basis leading to late game collapses, and bench players were inexplicably moved in and out of the rotation. I knew he was gonna get fired by how long it took for Masai to schedule this press conference.
I also think he lost the room. Siakam doesn’t seem to vibe with Nick. Fred doesn’t seem to like how the team has evolved. Scottie, who is the hope of the franchise, seemed like a guy Nick didn’t really like that much. I’m sure Gary isn’t a fan of Nick. I imagine our young players aren’t a fan because they never get a chance to play consistently.
Which brings me to a point that was probably the dealbreaker for Masai. It’s clear that Masai feels that one or two of these g-league guys can play in the league. But whether or not they can play, we have spent two years not being able to find out because Nurse wouldn’t play them. And if Nurse doesn’t play them then they can’t be evaluated against NBA competition so it’s impossible to know if they should be moved or retained. Maybe some of those guys can develop well enough to add to a trade or make space to trade someone else? Who knows? We don’t. And I’m sure that this contributed greatly to the move.
Personally, I thought Nurse deserved a year or at least half a season to redeem himself but Masai and them probably had enough reason and enough history to make the move. I ain’t mad at it.
I hope whoever takes over this team can play the style suited to this roster…fast, uptempo, transition basketball with free flowing offence based on ball and player movement and switching everything on D (except for Poetl).
I still think that Nurse didn’t truly commit to the lengthy wings thing and I still believe it’s a strategy that can work. But even if it can’t, Nurse didn’t lean into it at all. Can’t keep your job if you don’t give the boss an opportunity to see if the experiment they’re trying can be successful. It just seriously undermines your boss’ ability to do their jobs.
The head coach does not develop players. Teams literally have a position called “developmental coach”.
