If people can’t get invested in a final four that includes a team led by a 2x MVP in his prime trying to win his first ring, an underdog team led by one of the brightest young stars in the league, an exciting young squad anchored by a legendary veteran trying win his 1st ring, and a team from LA trying to win their 1st ring in franchise history…the NBA and their broadcasters can’t blame anyone but themselves.
none of those stories hit with casuals...:yeshrug:

there's a difference between being a bball star (Giannis, Trey, Luka, Book) and a star (Bron, KD, Harden, Curry). the nba markets stars, so yes, from the NBA making $/ratings perspective, you want a star and/or a major market (PHX is a big media market, but it aint a market that draws the interest of others around the country)

i personally think the playoffs have been amazing this year, very unpredictable, a lot of new talent showing out, and it'll be nice to see a completely new set of players in the finals. but from a biz perspective, you want that new talent being matched up against an established star or market. Lakers-Mil, Nets-Suns, either LA team vs BK - those are matchups the NBA would've loved to have.

And I’m saying if none of those “storylines” appeals to casual NBA fans then that’s a shortcoming on the part of the league. If they can’t get people to care unless a superteam or superstar is involved, then they’re the ones that need to consider switching up their marketing formula.

Uhh...that’s always been their bread and butter. Back to the magic vs bird/bos vs la days. The only way to get around that is like I said, have a rising star face an actual star so that the rising star can make the full leap.

I get that and I’m not denying that’s how they’ve historically been. But if the league ever wants to become bigger than they are, which I’m sure they do, they’re gonna have to evolve past that traditional way of thinking. The NBA and their broadcasters can’t continue to put all their eggs into the baskets of 4-5 teams and then act shocked when viewership tanks when those teams aren’t involved.
