I was hoping the Rockets would have a head start on y'all before he returned. :mjcry:

I was wondering when this talking point was gonna be brought up. Spurs have the #2 defense as well - even though he's a GREAT defender, he doesn't have the same impact. It's half the reason why the Spurs had a better defensive rating when he was off the floor for most of last season.

I think his defensive ability is more important in slowing/shutting down elite wings. His defense isn't as impactful as Draymond's or Gobert's for example.

So? He likes stats. He gets stats. Doesn't mean he made the right or smart play.

To be so-called ball dominant, Westbrook been distributing the ball A LOT... enough for 16 assists. Don't blame him for last year because 'dipo wasn't stepping up. He's stepping up now because there's ISN'T anyone else to turn to. Last season, he had his opportunity to do what Melo currently doing WHILE having Westbrook continuing to do him.... So, that's on him that he didn't step... it's not like he NEVER got a chance, not with someone averaging a triple double which MEANS the ball is being passed.

Exactly.

It most certainly isn't, which is what I've been trying to tell a lot of dudes on this board who argued otherwise. The Spurs defense isn't better without him, but it'll continue to be a great defense when he's not playing (they've ranked in the top-3 without him - top-2 this season) simply because his defensive role on the team doesn't have that sort of impact.

Oh, I'm well aware of that article.

But here's the thing, all of the best defensive anchors' impact aren't shifted by something as flimsy as random 3-pt% (certainly not 8 points per 100p) - which is why the Spurs have managed to have a GREAT defense when he's either on the bench, or not playing at all. I'm not saying the Spurs defense is better without him, I'm just saying that the narrative around how much defensive impact he has is overblown - not on the same level as Draymond and Gobert. Which is why I said, he's a great defender, but he doesn't have the same impact, mostly because he's a specialist and not someone who anchors the defense.

:manny:

Ahh gotcha, that makes sense. I agree, on ball defenders like Kawhi and Avery Bradley definitely don't have the impact as anchors such as Draymond and Gobert. It does feel as tho on ball defense is probably the most overrated aspect of judging defensive impact by most fans and media members. I think it's probably what played a huge role in Kobe having so many All Defensive Team Awards.

Before I understood this, I remember asking Jeremias Engleman (the creator of RPM) why Avery Bradley had low DRPM a few years ago. It makes a lot more sense to me these days.

Westbrook is uber ball dominant. There's literally no disputing that. He gets his teammates the ball when he sees a guaranteed assist. Not to get them in rhythm (because that matters)not to cut without the ball, just for the easy assists. Sometimes forced assists (see assist to turnover ratio). It's not about if he gets then the ball it's about when. When he wants or when it makes sense?
