That album completely dominated NY in a way I’d never seen before

D'Angelo is dope but I just don't see how you can think he's a better vocalist.

He's better for sure. He comes heavily from that Al Green school of vocals while R Kelly is more from that Charlie Wilson school.....who is great but noone would ever put in the league with Al Green

Kelly is surreal live.

No doubt, he is. I never said D'angelo was miles better vocally but nevertheless, he's better

And D'Angelo is a better instrumentalist but that's not Kelly's forte (he can play a mean piano though).

true

And it's not even remotely a debate if you want to talk about classic songs, breh. Not even the most ardent D'Angelo stans, like @brownsugah, would argue that D has more universally considered classic songs.

this has more to do with their style and how it relates to commercial pop. D'angelo is more trad soul/neo soul so he appeals more to older heads/people who love 60's and 70's R&B and tight musicianship

while R Kelly is hiphop soul and appeals to a younger audience that is bigger due to the hiphop-urban feel and connection

It's not close, it's Kels. And I don't even fukk with him, but D'Angelo's catalog is pretty underwhelming. Brown Sugar was more of a hip-hop head's vibe, which Kels never really touched, but he has some classic ballads. AND all of the ish he wrote for Changing Faces, Kelly Price, Aaliyah, Sparkle...

Kellz is more like Smokey Robinson with songwriting and Charlie Wilson with vocals. The man is cold. D'Angelo is more of a mixture of Marvin & Donny with Prince vocals.

I prefer D'Angelo if I have to choose, but Kellz is a legend.
