"It is not what I am saying that is hurting you; it is that you have wounds that I touch by what I have said.

You are hurting yourself.....

There is no way that I can take this personally, because I know that you see the world with different eyes, with your eyes. You create an entire picture or movie in your mind, and in that picture you are the director, you are the producer, you are the main actor or actress. Everyone else is a secondary actor or actress. It is your movie.

The way you see that movie is according to the agreements that you made with life. Your point of view is something personal to you. It is no one’s truth but yours.

When you take things personally, then you feel offended, and your reaction is to defend your beliefs and create conflicts. You make something big out of something so little, because you have the need to be right and make everybody else wrong. You also try hard to be right by giving them your own opinions. In the same way, whatever you feel and do is just a projection of your own personal dream, a reflection of your own agreements. What you say, what you do, and the opinions you have are according to the agreements you have made.

Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. All people live in their own dream, in their own mind; they are in a completely different world from the one we live in. When we take something personally, we make the assumption that they know what is in our world, and we try to impose our world on their world.

Others are going to have their own opinion according to their belief system, so nothing they think about me is really about me, but it is about them. Whatever you think, whatever you feel, I know is your problem. It is the way you see the world. It is nothing personal, because you are dealing with yourself, not with me.

You are never responsible for the actions of others; you are only responsible for you. When you truly understand this, and refuse to take things personally, you can hardly be hurt by the careless comments or actions of others."

"In our country alone there are over a million men and woman – not even counting juveniles – in prisons. There are an estimated three million homeless people. Poverty is widespread, and fear is the national currency. People seek the security of love, yet at the same time they are isolated, alienated – even from themselves. Isolation and alienation are barriers, forces of division. What shatters these barriers is dialogue.

Even in a free democracy, the States always attempts to control dialogue – to decide for its own interests the limits of allowable discourse. In order to be heard, one must have wealth, power, influence, rank. It’s the same with the media. The media always quotes the same roundtable of "experts". Where are the voices of the poor, the excluded, the powerless? Absent those voices, absent a recognition of their worth, there can be no true dialogue, and thus no true democracy.

Objectivity in journalism is an illusion, a hollow word, yet it becomes so real to its perpetrators, who have been poisoned with the lie from the first day of journalism school, that they end up not believing in it,
but letting it form the whole foundation of their profession. It’s always been a great ideal, but in reality it’s misguided belief. And they end up using it to justify everything they do.

When you look at news today – I’m talking now about national network newscasts – it is astounding that what used to make the local news, if that, is now considered as having national importance. Local crime stories, especially the most lurid ones, become national news stories not because of anything extraordinary about them, but because that is the stuff that sells. It’s the old jingle: “If it bleeds, it leads.” They don’t feed the public pieces that stimulate intelligent thought, pieces that might make people talk or even ask questions about the fundamental relationships of power, rand, and status in
this country. They’re more interested in sensation.

It’s almost as if the average newscast has been reduced and molded to fit Hard Copy or some other such show like that. The end product is trash, but it is trash that has been carefully designed to attract you emotionally, to touch you sensationally, to get you looking (but not thinking). It doesn’t provoke you or encourage to question the fundamentals. The real issues behind stories are often ignored. They’re not considered important enough to be raised."

"The experience of oppressed people is that the living of one’s life is confined and shaped by forces and barriers which are not accidental or occasional and hence avoidable, but are systematically related to each other in such a way as to catch one between and among them and restrict or penalize motion in any direction. It is the experience of being caged in: all avenues, in every direction, are blocked or booby trapped.

Cages. Consider a birdcage. If you look very closely at just one wire in the cage, you cannot see the other wires. If your conception of what is before you is determined by this myopic focus, you could look at that one wire, up and down the length of it, and be unable to see why a bird would not just fly around the wire any time it wanted to go somewhere. Furthermore, even if, one day at a time, you myopically inspected each wire, you still could not see why a bird would gave trouble going past the wires to get anywhere. There is no physical property of any one wire, nothing that the closest scrutiny could discover, that will reveal how a bird could be inhibited or harmed by it except in the most accidental way. It is only when you step back, stop looking at the wires one by one, microscopically, and take a macroscopic view of the whole cage, that you can see why the bird does not go anywhere; and then you will see it in a moment. It will require no great subtlety of mental powers. It is perfectly obvious that the bird is surrounded by a network of systematically related barriers, no one of which would be the least hindrance to its flight, but which, by their relations to each other, are as confining as the solid walls of a dungeon.

It is now possible to grasp one of the reasons why oppression can be hard to see and recognize: one can study the elements of an oppressive structure with great care and some good will without seeing the structure as a whole, and hence without seeing or being able to understand that one is looking at a cage and that there are people there who are caged, whose motion and mobility are restricted, whose lives are shaped and reduced."

"Simply put, realist are not afraid to look at the harsh circumstances of life. They sharpen their eye by paying keen attention to details, to people's intentions, to dark realities hiding behind any glamorous surface. Like any muscle that is trained, they develop the capacity to see with more intensity."

At any moment in life you can convert to realism, which is not a belief system at all, but a way of looking at the world. It means every circumstance, every individual is different, and your task is to measure that difference, then take appropriate action. Your eyes are fixed on the world, not on yourself or your ego. What you see determines what you think and how you act. The moment you believe in some cherished idea that you will hold on to no matter what your eyes and ears reveal to you, you are no longer a realist.

Reality has its own power - you can turn your back on it but it will find you in the end, and your inability to cope with it will be your ruin."

Genuine love should be unselfish, if not, it will only become a means of manipulating the other person to derive pleasure for oneself....

"All persons whose psyches are unhealthy and unbalanced. Unconsciously, like a parasite, they cling to a healthy creature to feed on its vital life force and emotions. The individual in this case, only adopts the appearance of being in love, using this attitude to further his own interests (without any respect for their partner).

The weight of loneliness is something which strongly pushes a person to participate in a false relationship, because he believes that the relationship will relieve his loneliness. This belief makes the individual give himself to his new object of affection with such passion so as to convince his partner that he is deeply in love, when in fact, he is only looking for a way to quiet his feelings of anxiety.

Often when a man or a woman seeks a partner, they are not motivated by love, but by the hope of finding a person with whom love can be developed. However, the individual does not envision a relationship from the point of view of what love means, but of the personal advantages to be gained from love. Sexual gratification, protection from solitude and anxiety and economic security are all some of the most common motives in both men and women. In other instances, people may seek love for love's sake, wanting to satisfy the fantasy of a romantic love with no practical purpose, no idea of what is to come after the initial state of the romantic relationship. They only think that they will live a fantasy of love without any specific definition.

The main point is that love cannot be compulsive, nor the result of neurotic conflicts or unleashed impulses. The compulsive expression of love is not found in Nature. Such expression is a fiction and the individual plays his part under penalty of painful repercussions. The person forced to act by his compulsion will resort to deceiving himself and to believing that he really knows and enjoys the part he must play. The strength of his alienation is such that he totally forgets that his behavior is compulsive and convinces himself that it is really voluntary.

Such a union is neither generated by nor sustained by love, but by neurotic need. Love does not offer a real solution to the problem of the lone neurotic; only a cover-up. The individual has not solved his existential position by living through another person. He is more or less in the same position as seriously ill people connected to machines which keep them alive in some way. Such a relationship is born ofcorrupt love, a love that is not genuine, a form of pseudo-companionship whose imbalance is expressed through manipulation and selfishness.

If an individual has not managed to feel comfortable with himself, he will not find comfort in other people. Inner desolation cannot be dispelled with external company."
