Ha, well wouldn't want to speculate on that, but what I am interested in is the use of friend zone.

It seems like a lot of words from like 20 years ago are still being used, but the definition is being pushed further and further, negatively.

For example, simping, a word that is used by straight up nerds who don't even go on dates, much less have 'casual sex', kids who are like 22 years old, but across the age range, are using to to describe ANY sort of interest or attraction. Simp, to me, like in high school was doing the most for someone who mostly wasn't even engaging with you at all.

Go on a date = simping

compliment a woman = simping

don't have sex on the first date = simping

calling a woman = simping

double texting a woman: simping

paying for dinner = simping

having sex more than once with a woman = simping

being in a relationship = simping


They are using it for anything and everything. And so for friend zone, that used to mean, if a woman 'liked' you, called, texted, went out, but would not sleep with you. I wonder if that is another term where the context has been totally collapsed.

I equate friendzone nowadays to having a more negative connotation. So everything you stated about it, with the added caveat that the women doing the "friendzoning" are not approaching it with genuine intentions. The newly anointed "friend" is just a resource and outlet for emotional and financial support.

wasn't the primary issue of the "friend zone" someone that you hadn't had sex with, but wanted to? but who wouldn't sleep with you, but would talk, or go out, or complain to whatever?

Does it now include someone you used to date or sleep with/both, who you are still in touch with, but don't sleep with anymore?

I realize that none of these words are exact, and have different definitions, but they write about this kinda shyt in the NY Times now.

This falls under that umbrella of comical things in dating where people are petrified of having their feelings hurt and so avoid any sort of definitive conclusions and keep things purposely vague. Any thing that may expose you to being human and the spectrum of emotions that entails specifically the negative ones create these nebulous complexities....... because in truth you see exactly what that girl and many others male or female are doing in the situation above: that friendzoned person became the emergency, contingency, contingency, emergency plan should the day arise that the spectre of getting old alone appears...

Not necessarily. More than likely she has her eye on someone else or was using him to kill time until the guy she wanted pulled up. Gist of it is you never know why these women behave the way they do. He did the right thing…radio silence and move on.

She fully expected him to come groveling after that “no connection” bullshyt text. That’s why she kept watching his stories because she was perplexed at how this nikka just deaded her to Bolivia. Her last hoorah to get him to respond is by unfollowing him.

This too. Sometimes the old adage of “don’t be the first man to treat her right” rings true because these broken women will run you through the trials of Olympus just to have a relationship but give the world to the abuser, user, and players.

I maintain that women aren’t mentally set up to accumulate all this trauma from situationships and failed relationships to then go on to finally have a successful one with a good man. It never works. Chicks deading 3-5 month relationships that are going great for no reason. If they can’t trauma bond they short circuit.

The usage and definition of terms like that changed according to today’s dating environment. You can’t compare 10-20-30 years ago simping/friendzoning to todays. Women behave differently than those times. More evidence on hypergamy and the behavior of women on the net

The dating landscape has swung so far into the ladies control that basic shyt like calling and taking a woman out is simping because the jury is out, women have smashed and dated dudes for less. A nikka came through in some slides, wife beater and shorts to twist her back out meanwhile you trying to treat her nice wine and dining just for her to run back to the nikka only pulling up to beat.

It’s an attempt at men taking back control or trying to regain some power in the dating game.

Life is about negotiating. In the instance of dating we are always negotiating to keep that equilibrium in the relationship. She failed her negotiation with you and the other girl failed with op.

Like business deals you have to be able to walk away. For men, in dating and relationships, walking away is the real power you have when a woman is out of pocket.

That's an insightful perspective. I still think the "social media stretch" of words is more real than not. And I would press the point that it's the overall structure of social media, and it's omnipresence that has created this, or heightened some of that performative behavior. Context creep is the term I learned.

To the bolded, that has always been true, you can look at music/movie, other cultural references for that going back to the 90's, at a minimum. Even classic literature has those same scenarios. You can read books written in the 1900's and 1800's that have that scenario, of the "respectful (but dull/bad in bed) suitor" and the "passionate lover".

Another example is "catching feelings". Of course white/suburban American has always taken rap/black slang and used it, the term dates back to at least 1996, with No Diggity, in popular mainstream use.

Around 2017, catching feelings began to be used on college campuses and later across the board, of ANY sort of interaction between the sexes, that wasn't cold and removed. But the term was never really about no feelings, it was about setting an expectation.
