What is everyone freaking out in this thread about right now?
Walton was never going to have any kind of real conversation about a job while the team is on a playoff run.
We know the Knicks are not that talented right now, and need more young good players. KP is a potential young star. Galloway and Grant are young, potentially useful guards. O'Quinn is a useful rotation forward and 26, Derrick Williams was a surprisingly useful player, he's 24, and our best signing is Lopez at 28.
Considering how old, overpaid, and broken the team was 2 years ago... this is an alright place to be. But they're just not very good.
Next year we'll get Hernangomez, who's another solid forward, and will be 22. I'm sure we'll try to steal a draft pick for cash this year (phil's done it a few times) somewhere near the beginning of the second round. And we'll take a look at free agents/RFA's. I know they've also been looking around at some international free agents as well.
The first order of business is to sign a good coach. Walton was not going to sign or agree to the job during the season. So we wait. He's out there. Thibs is out there (maybe minny blows it?), Blatt is out there... there are useful and talented coaches out there that can help this team. Let's wait to see what happens this offseason before your freak out.
It's like all of you just finally realized what I was trying to explain to you LAST summer. Freaking out that phil hasn't fixed this dumpster fire in 2 short years is silly. He drafted a potential star, he has flexibility to flip melo this offseason if melo doesn't want to be around for the rebuild. Or he can add a decent piece, and maybe have a outside shot at a playoff spot next year.
Or they'll tank, and take on another high pick. Honestly... that'd be okay too. KP could use a running mate. Josh Jackson, Fultz, Tatum... there's talent out there.
Enjoy watching truly talented teams in the playoffs... then let's worry about the coach and the roster. Most of these new york writers right now are desperate to write about anything. This is their slow season. .
