Just like every early gen game, whether they are cross gen or not
Difference is, there was a clear drop off where ps3/360 or ps2/xbox just couldn't offer a similar experience.

There's no way you'd get an Order 1886 or Ryse experience on ps360 or Gears Of War or Resistance Fall Of Man on Ps2/Xbox, there eventually was a point where we said "yeah, Next Gen is here".
And that line would eventually become very clear and defined.

You could get those games if they downgraded them to work on the ps3 just like they are doing with ps5 cross gen titles

Doubt it.
By 2013 with titles like The Last Of Us or Gears Or War 3, we'd pretty much reached the limits of what Ps360 could offer.

I think trying to do something like The Last Of Us II or Gears 5 on ps360 would've resulted in a drastically cut down/chunked version or even
an entirely different game altogether.

The Last of Us for example ran the ps3's 512Mb memory pool and Cell Processor ragged to the point they struggled to fit all of their various targets into
a single frame and regularly ran sub-30 fps.
Or in the case of Resistance Fall of Man, if you ever geeked out over the "Makings of" like I did, you'd noticed the chief engineer mentioned how
the Emotion Engine and GS couldn't possibly run the physics calculations they were doing in real time ON TOP of everything else they were doing.
Resistance Fall Of Man would've been more in the vein of Half Life or Killzone if they were restricted to 32Mb of memory and a comparatively slower
GPU/CPU.

All that fake concern about next generation games being held back.

But Sony does it and...

My post from September 2020 about Horizon:
Now that we know this game is coming to PS4 as well, I want to know how they managed to make the game look like this while cross gen because I know it can't look this good on PS4.

It seems like the PS5 version will graphically be next gen but design wise(I assume for parity) will be limited e.g. there won't be super fast flying mounts in game since the PS4 can't stream the assets fast enough.

Graphically the comparisons made a few months ago were crazy.

Yeah, those are late gen games:dwillhuh:

I’m specifically talking about early gen, like TLOU a lot of early gen games can easily exist on ps3

Fair take IMO

We don't just want prettier graphics
We want to see advancements in game design, ideas, set pieces, sequences, etc.
The previous playstations had exclusives you could only experience on that platform built from the ground up for that platform
now, we have the likes of ragnarok being held by back by nearly 10 year old hardware:hhh::scust:
I don't care how next gen GOW's gameplay is, and I know the gameplay is going to be fire, but we will always wonder how much better it could have been
Imagine a studio like Santa Monica pushing the PS5 to its limits with a PS5 only GOW :ohlawd:
The fights between Thor and Odin :ohlawd:

I swear gamers have the shortest memory span...

Xbox one and PS4 didn't turn "next gen exclusive" until like 2016, when the consoles came out in november 2013, shyt black ops 3 was still on ps3 and 360....remember how PS2 was still getting need for speed ports for games that was coming out on PS3 and 360?

This is always how it is, things take time to fully transition

yeah but my post was specifically about "True" Next Gen titles.
Not cross gen.

So was mine, I’m saying just like the previous gen (ps4) the early games don’t have distinct generation gap, which is why a lot of them, like TLOU, GTA, metal gear solid are able to exist as cross gen games.

The big differences don’t occur until mid-late gen, like TLOU2, GOW, Tsushima etc. Thats gonna be the same case for this gen whether or not these games are coming out this year are cross-gen or not. The big leaps will be made a few years from now.

Early on (the first 2 to 3 years right up to "mid-gen") there were several titles that were well and beyond whatever was on ps360.
There was no equivalent experience for The Order 1886/Ryse/Shadowfall and a few others that I can't recall right now.
I was right in the mix of all of the late gen ps3 titles (Resistance 3, The Last Of Us, Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, etc.) and
a day one owner of ps4 (I'm in the ps4 launch thread on this site), so for me the difference was stark and obvious vs. the ps360 days.

Having over 10x more gigs of ram to use for their titles made that a pretty easy and obvious win.

Sony and their devs have said that's what they're trying to avoid. Sony is in the business of making more money this gen than any generation before. That's why thy made the PS5 the easiest Sony console their first party devs ever had to develop for, largely because it shares a lot of similarities in structure to the PS4 hence the 99.99% backwards compatibility and cross gen madness. It was too irresistible for Sony. That nearly 10 year familiarity w/ PS4 hardware is going to pay off early and allow devs to push the PS5 earlier in the generation if COVID can go away because of the PS4 similarity. According to Cory Barlog, they were excited for the PS5 because it would allow them to release their games faster, e.g. 2-3 year development cycles instead of 3-6 year development cycles e.g. R&C an AAA game was made in only 2 years
But COVID fukked that up and the long term development of these games. Once they get back on track and COVID dies down, expect more groundbreaking games to release faster. Some more games could have been released earlier if not due to COVID. Hopefully we start seeing more PS5 ONLY games in 2022 onward.

that's true for multiplat games, but the first party games are usually exclusive to the new system

Console gaming has never been in the state its in now where we are getting upgrades/patches to games we already own either.
