If Trump gets destroyed, they will change. If Trump loses but doesn't get destroyed, it will cement their belief that the winning candidate needs to be Trump without the baggage.

It is not up to the establishment and has not been since 2016. The establishment has always hated Trump.
The BASE will decide who wins the primary, not the party members. And the base may be voting Trump in 2028 and beyond, no matter how low his chances of winning.

I could see that actually happening next year if Trump for whatever reason doesn't get his way. The access for independents to appear on a ballot is low for someone like Trump who has a vast network of cronies and cult members who will do anything for him.
