Hip hop is probably one of the few genres where fans try to justify Grammy nominations by sales. Same with pop fans. I get that with song nominations though. But imo they made the right move by nominating albums by artists who actually care about putting out good cohesive albums & not albums by these "hot" artists who seem to care more about hit singles
How do you know those "hot" artists didnt care about putting cohesive albums out?

Blu & Exile made a better album than both of them imo, so did Benny The Butcher. D Smoke is talented but feels like a plant with the talent show and this nomination
I mean... in this era I’m not sure what you’re expecting. You’ll be hard pressed to find an artist that starting bubbling from local shows organically. I’m not even sure I get your definition of an industry plant for real.

It feels "planted" not organic. No one was really talking about D Smoke on here, and his album didn't really sell. The other albums had fairly large threads on here, and are from well known artists that weren't on a talent show on Netflix. Pops album was a massive success

I believe I mentioned D smokes album on here... but somebody first text me about it and I listened to his previous project. As far s Pop smoke, his project might’ve been boosted due to his death. It’s not really a Nipsey situation bc he got aGrammy nom prior to his murder.

To be fair I tried to listen to Pop’s album and Lil Baby’s My Turn as those were the top two that people were saying got snubbed. Couldn’t get through either of them. I know that they sold a TON of records but artistically it felt like what alot of these new school rappers are doing. Making 1-2 hit singles and then crafting soundalikes across a 20 song album to get streams. Call me an old head or:flabbynsick: all you want but I can’t fukk with mindless music, endless trap beats, and autotune.

Them kids got nominations for their songs because thats what their good at, making good individual SONGS. They can’t craft ALBUMS to save their lives.

Nas, Royce, Gibbs, Jay Elect, made great ALBUMS. I still have to listen to D Smoke to properly judge him so I won’t speak on him. Royce & Gibbs have been grinding for YEARS and making great music. Hell Gibbs should’ve been nominated last year for Bandana. Jay Elect put out a great project (He loses points from some for relying on Hov for alot of the songs and being outshined on some tracks. But if you can get an inspired and hungry Jay-Z on your project that means your doing SOMETHING right in the first place) Nas, 27 years in the game, put out one the best albums of not only HIS career, but the entire year. They ALL deserve their nominations.

What NEEDS to happen, as i’ve said before, is that the committee needs to petition for additional categories the Rap field. Rock, Country, and R&B have multiple categories and Rap outsells ALL of those genres as of 2017. There needs to be a Best Rap Album as well as a “Best Traditional Hip Hop Album” category. That way the Lil whatevers and the NBA whoseits can be nominated and the more underground focused or lyrical artists can be recognized as well.

the irony is up until not too long ago hip hop fans/proponents largely CRITICIZED the grammies for selecting nominees based on popularity/album sales lol

I mean i understand it on some level. It's a little ridiculous that rappers like Royce and D Smoke are nominated over genuinely relevant (and imo far more interesting mainstream artists) but at the end of the day these cats sell the most records, get the most airplay, get paid the most money for shows, get the biggest promotion....ain't that enough? Can't a Gibbs just get a little bit of shine? Do ya'll have to have everything :dwillhuh:

This reminds me of Marvel stans complaining about The Avengers not getting a best picture nomination...i mean the film did a billion at the box office....let some other people eat.

His wiki says he got nominated for the "Dior" joint :manny: he didn't get 100% snubbed.
