D Smoke & Jay Electronica didn't have better albums than Pop Smoke, Lil Baby or Roddy Rich :mjlol::russ:

I can’t speak on D Smoke but the Lil Baby and Roddy albums are mid. I’ll give Roddy credit though for his production being a bit more varied than Lil’ Baby’s, whose album pretty much sounds like one never-ending song.

I haven’t listened to Pop Smokes album to have an opinion... but is it better than any of the others?

fukk all that, Pop Smoke was 1 of the biggest rap artists of 2020. Did you see the nominations?

This seems to be the argument with the Grammys. Is it a popularity contest? Or based off how good the music was.

Because I prefer it how they did it this year, picking albums that had some substance. Pop Smoke was a decent artist with potential for a whole lot more, but that album really fell short. (RIP)

DMX didn't get a Grammy nom for "It's Dark", that and 50 not winning for "Get Rich" are the two biggest snubs in Hip Hop history imo. So other complaints, while maybe valid, will never be at that level of inaccurate.

I think a combination of culturally impactful (on a large scale) and high quality is what should be nominated for Grammy's.

Album was better than the Allegory.
Hmm... I think Lil Baby’s album should replace the Royce one. I like the D Smoke & Freddie picks... I haven’t ran the Nas album back enough honestly. Lost tapes is probably his last great release imo

So what do you think should be the balance between respecting people who did numbers, like Pop and Baby, while also respecting underground artists?

The Grammys are trolling by making the rap categories lean so far left. They didn’t include any albums that had commercial success. I’m not saying that’s the criteria for the Grammys. Lil Baby and Pop Smoke, those were culturally impactful records. You look at the songs from Pop Smoke, they were super relevant with what was going on in our community earlier this year. Same for Lil Baby, he dropped a record specifically talking about issues. This is music that’s the soundtrack of our lives. That’s what people are listening to, broadly. Some people are listening to Freddie Gibbs like you said, some are listening to Jay Electronica. But those are subsects. Across the board, this is what people are listening to to get them through their days.

This is not 2002, where record labels can force music down consumers’ throats. People go on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, and they pick what they want to listen to. The public made this decision that these albums are what they’re listening to, so what are we talking about with these nominations? Now more than ever. How do you not incorporate that into the “biggest awards in music”? How do you not factor that in? You have to this year, more than any year. You have to listen to what the people want.

This is very disingenuous. Acting like record label promotion and marketing no longer determines what consumers pay attention to is nonsense. FOH.

I don’t think their albums are mid for what they are. My preference is Krit/Le$/Curren$y type rap but I try to keep an open mind. To me the beats get a little repetitive and a few too many tracks on Lil Baby album. I liked the transitions between tracks on Roddy

Hip hop is probably one of the few genres where fans try to justify Grammy nominations by sales. Same with pop fans. I get that with song nominations though. But imo they made the right move by nominating albums by artists who actually care about putting out good cohesive albums & not albums by these "hot" artists who seem to care more about hit singles
