I have no opinion on whether it is geographically because I imagine that debate could go on for quite a while...

CULTURALLY THO................Texas is very much culturally everything people associate southerners with

Facts. Texas is huge. El Paso is also dumb far from Houston/Dallas and feels more related to Arizona.
As a kid, we'd drive back from Florida to Texas, and as soon as we entered the state from the East(like around Beaumont Texas) there'd always be a distance sign for El Paso and it'd say something like

El Paso 846 Miles

As a kid, that blew my mind. As an adult, that blows my mind. What's even crazier is, Florida has similar extreme distances between cities. You can get from Beaumont to El Paso in 11hrs. Pensacola to Key West is around 12-13hrs. Florida(unlike Texas) is deceptively large. Florida(like Texas) sits in two timezones.

Brooklyn keeps on taking it.
It’s wild how that works out considering VA gave birth to the South...literally, culturally, etc.

People question it now IMO because the urban areas, particularly the parts that are associated with DC, skew most people’s perception. I don’t see rural VA ever not being Southern.

Even with that the rural parts of Delaware feel southern to me.

I traveled to Tysons Corner, VA where the wealthy folks live and it felt like I was in Westchester, NY.

People using the subway or metro like a northern city as well lol.

But yea Rural areas will def be southern.

Yep....El Paso is closer to California than it is to far East TX.

Far West TX is like New Mexico. Dallas/Houston is the south. Now once you towards the Valley past San Antonio....that's just north Mexico basically.
Yep. You can get to Los Angeles CA from El Paso TX in the same time you can get from El Paso to Houston TX.

I didn’t realize how far El Paso was from Houston/Dallas till I randomly checked the distances between Texan cities.

I was like wtf.

But someone mentioned El Paso is close to Cali. Not really cause my app tells me that’s an 11 hour drive

Have you been there yet? I wonder what it's like culturally compared to the other big cities

@Pigeon in the future I don’t think VA will even be considered South anymore like Maryland.

Many southerners feel like they’re already in the east coast when they are there.

The DMV portion of Virginia feels very Northern.

I met a dude from Roanoake the other day (not even a DC suburb) and he had no accent. But I have to imagine the Appalachian part will feel Southern for the forseeable future

The south is every state where slavery was permitted and supported the Confederacy in 1865, including Missouri, which was legally made the south by an act of Congress via the Missouri Compromise.
Close thread.

Texas was gaining 100,000 slaves a decade at its slaveholding peak, how the fukk isn’t it the South?

Never been to Texas before but I’m planning to go to both Houston and Dallas in one trip.

As far as Virginia goes I also notice the AA artist from there have no obvious drawl in their speech.

Chris Brown, Missy Elliot, Pharrell & Trey Songz do not have obvious southern accents. I’m not going to include the clipse because they are from The Bronx originally.

West Virginia feels 1 million times much more southern than VA
