Oklahoma might be a plains state, but they are considered a Southern state by many. They have pretty strong Southern sounding accents

Idk about by many. OK has strong Southern influence but culturally, it isn’t as close to the Deep South like that.

There are some aspects of Texan culture that are kind of unique to Texas and not to the general south.

Example: Texas cuisine has been influenced heavily by it's old Mexican roots and border hence the term "Tex-Mex". There's the cowboy culture as well which unique to the Great Plans and the Desert West states, and, Texas. Cowboy culture isn't as prevalent in the typical "South".

I can see why people consider Texas as southern by location, but not really by culture. I think you could say the same thing about Florida, Kentucky and Oklahoma (except I don't think a lot of people consider OK as "the South")

This is faulty logic because you can literally go state by state in the South and find cuisine, dialect, and language unique to them. So let's disband the entire South, then, because, *shocker*, all states are unique from each other in some form...

Why doesn't anybody pick apart northern or western states like this?

Texas is a southern state. The further west you go is starts transitioning from southern to more interior western culture, but it's still a southern state. I'm from Virginia which is also a southern state. The eastern part of the state is transitional with a unique Northeast/Southeast blend, and by the time you get to Northern Virginia, its mostly characteristically Northeast---->but Virginia is still a southern state...

Texas isn't so unique that the fact that there are things about it not typical of the traditional South, should preclude it from the South. I'd say DFW and Houston and that entire East Texas area typify the South more than Richmond and Northern Virginia...

No doubt all states are unique, but the premise/debate is that if you look at the defining/generally accepted characteristics of the South, you’ll find that Texas has a large number of peculiar characteristics from the rest of the states to really consider it Southern.

Kinda like Florida. The Northern Panhandle is closer in feel/culture of the south but the Southern half might as well be little Cuba lol.

Interesting pic I saw on Wikipedia concerning Southern cuisine. Dark red is definite south. Red is sometimes considered south, stripped Red is rarely considered South.

I think this nails it.

What generally accepted things of the South are we talking about? Because these regional definitions are sliding and fluid. I'm not from Texas and I've only been to Dallas, which I most definitely thought was southern, but I'm not an expert on Texas culture, so educate me on where it doesn't have generally accepted southern characteristics and features...

This is dope, and illustrates a little the fluidity in what is considered southern. I've been to West V several times, that state southern than a muhfukka lol...I been to Maryland many times, don't you live in Maryland? I would say in modern times, it's definitely more characteristically northern than southern, but by no stretch is it absent of southern culture and characteristics. You can see the southern in Maryland easier if you're coming from a traditionally northern state, whereas if you come to Maryland from deeper in the South, it's easier to point out what isn't southern...

I lived in Upstate New York for a year and a half. Maryland may not be that southern compared to Louisiana, but for sure its southern compared to New York...

I think for the most part its mannerisms, language, cuisine and history.

Texas has Tex-Mex cuisine which isn’t widespread in the other southern states.

Most of the Southern churches are Southern Baptists. Texas I think leans more to Catholicism.

Texas has a far bigger spanish influence than the rest of the South.

When you think of cowboys, you think of a Texan, not really a southerner.

I think when you pille on these nuances and take the size of Texas into account, you start to see Texas more as a culture of its own.

That's Louisiana with a big AA Catholic community due to the french influence. Most blacks are baptist in Texas. Unless you are talking about Mexicans. I'm not from Texas but my family comes from Texas and Louisiana.

My only problem with this is mentally excluding the fact that most Texas blacks practice religion like southern blacks, eat like southern blacks, for gotdamn sure have southern accents, and when you talk about the history of hip hop in Texas, it is undeniably of a southern lineage...

I'm only mentioning a few things about black Texans because we're black, if I was invested I could do the same for whites and Mexicans...

So I think you make good points but its willfully ignoring southern characteristics in Texas. It is very unique and of it's own world, but it's got some clear southernisms I think would be disingenuous to discount!

I think Texas encompasses Southern characteristics AND more. In doing so, it creates it’s own unique cultute that really isn’t replicated anywhere else in the USA, hence me saying it’s southern but ultimately it’s Texan.
