There are little zones where you can catch free roaming wild pokemon, called wild areas..
Most of the game is still pretty linear though

The sad part is Pokémon colosseum and XD were far more interesting and those were spin-offs.
And then you have the fact that battle animations were worse then Pokémon Stadium which is a 20 year old game.

Yall have to realize Pokemon is on a yearly schedule. This series is no different then 2k and madden at this point. The quality yall want to see simply can't happen at the release schedule this series has.
Nintendo is NEVER going to put resources into a full fledge pokemon MMO when they can sell 2 games each at 60$ a piece YEARLY(Or i guess 30$ now if the midgen game being dlc will be a continuing trend.)

firered, heartgold, emerald, platinum.
Silver, and platinum are my favorite.
