Ayers was the problem not Leto.
Leto didn't choose get to costume design to look like a crackhead.
Leto doesn't have the clout to assert creative freedom in a film that didn't need him. Which was stupid... Joker should of been a key integral piece, but they rather use the worst fukking villian imaginable. Ayer is a mediocre director that needs to be called out more. Him writing the story in 6 weeks is the biggest red flag. Regardless if the studio force his hand. If you material needs more time. You get more time. You don't just do as you told when it's reputation as a film maker on the line.

A while back Ayer admitted he should've made Joker the villain in "Suicide Squad". Leto was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
