Above the fray.
I never heard real soul music that Quincy made that was good. His whole legacy of pop post 60s is built on MJ's work not really his own. So I would say
As for sampling, that is true, but I would say James Brown is a bigger influence on hip hop if you want to cite sampling than Quincy Jones every dreamed of. On top of that I think James Brown is a superior performer and muscian.
That that said its subjective.
As for jamming, great, its great in the avenues it takes place in, reducing a good modern producer's work to pressing buttons is about as foolish and snobbish as reducing jazz to jungle music that is gutteral and simple, like whites did it before it was taken over by whites.
Like I said before though, he comments dismissing someone like Kanye as nothing because he directed orchestras and composed rubs me the wrong way because by that standarded the people who made the music he grew up on are nothing before him.
That said we'll just have to agree to disagree on Q.
As for Pharrell not being sued yet, thats pretty poor reasoning actually, Pharrell is a excellent ear for music and melody. The only issue I have with him was lying and acting like he knew more than he actually did, instead of owning up and admitting he doesn't know shyt about music and theory, he just makes what he likes to hear.

1) subjective about the quality of his soul or funk records. Can they stand up to JB,EWF,Stevie,P-funk of that era?
ABSOLUTELY not...Was just saying that he's made credible good music in near every form of African American created music. He didn't make good hip hop, but artists from that genre created good music using songs he created.

2) if a person isn't vocalizing, writing music or playing an instrument...then how would you categorize their attempts to make music? JB and the same soul legends I just listed laughed at disco "producers" for the same reasons. This reality has nothing to do with and can't be compared to eurocentrists dismissing jazz/blues in racist ways.

3)Kanye west doesn't read/write music and can't play any instruments. The fact that he sells millions doesn't change the fact that technically he's not a musician. The Blues and Jazz legends that Q obviously idolizes created THE definitive American artform, upon which nearly all the followed is based. Can't compare prime numbers to other numbers...and it's a reach to think that what Q is saying disparages the pioneers.

4)You posted the story of his deposition. What original songs is he producing when he can't answer (under oath, no less) elementary questions about music, and can't read/write music? Pushing buttons and playing programmed beats. & chords?

Sanford and Son is a excellent song, the theme.
That said was a leader in the soul/funk genre? Hell no, compare him to Brown same period.

As for compositions, not a real fan of his orchestral works to be honest, but I admit I'm biased, very biased towards the composition and sound of Wagner and Strauss. Which is probably why I like scores and compositions from the Hans Zimmer family of production.

To be honest though I don't think I've ever heard a composition from Jones that I would put on the level of anything I've heard and enjoyed from Goldsmith or Horner.

Never said he was leader of soul/funk...James Brown eats Q's breakfast every day of the week when it comes to soul and funk. He was absolutely going to be overshadowed by more prominent artists of that musically fertile era . He did make great soul and funk records..many of which were sampled into hits. My point was about him playing and mastering AfAm music genres. If there is a book written about the history of American music, if he's not covered extensively the book is a fraud.

I went back and discovered that Q's hands are on a lot of songs and film scores that I liked..I think straight jazz might be his strongest genre, but this guy has done it all...and done it well.

1) got you
2) the person is playing an instrument, its jsut a automated and computer instrument, instead of a physical one. As for JB and other soul people hating, I feel the same way, there is no reason we have to attack each other like black muscians do, I understand why, the reality is in a white controlled field they know there are only so many of them that will get shine, but I think thats a old way that needs to be removed in thinking. That said I still think the snipe at Kanye was a white appealing backed snipe, more than a class view. That said again we'll just agree to disagree.
3) Okay, MJ didn't read or write music, and couldn't play instruments. He wasn't a muscian either? He didn't produce timeless and classic music? Thats my point. Again if you want to talk about a person as a instrumentalist fine, but as a producer and arranger and creator of music Kanye is special, just like Pharrell, just like Micheal. That MJ and Kanye couldn't play instruments doesn't negate their accomplishment and their artistry in the form of music.
4) Pharrell is very successful and talented his original works Pharrell Williams production discography - Wikipedia the man is talented. Again you don't need to know how to play a single instrument or read music if you can make good music.

Q is talented man and worthy of his praise. I don't slight his talent or accomplishment at all.

He's essentially saying what everyone else says "they coming for YOU next"

But the thing is, y'all have to get your stories straight. Folks on here were saying that after the musloms and Mexicans, they are coming for us(black people). But here we have a black personal telling EVERYONE else that they aren't just targeting blacks, they are coming for everyone else.

People really want to make it seem like Trump is "coming for black people"...

Bannon is gone and Sessions is on the way out. There aren't even enough impactful "white supremacists" left on the roster for me black people to be scared.

1.ok

2. Heating up a tv dinner, is not cooking. JB and others rightfully saw disco as a passing fad and a joke...and insight-fully as a way for record companies to cut production costs. Also it removed the "soul" out of popular Black music the same way that processed foods remove the real nutritious parts out of food. The great funk artists adapted, but the rise of disco ended one of the most innovative periods in Black music.

3. MJ was an expert vocalist and showman with soul. Voice is the original instrument, so of course he's a musician. He didn't produce timeless classics though,..he collaborated with actual musicians to get what was in his head on to a track and made classic records/albums. Kanye used pete rock/marley marl/rza style of sampling OTHER people's music to create his songs. Kanye doesn't deserve to mentioned in the same book...much less sentence as MJ

4. Link has Blurred Lines listed, so what is it ....a list of....songs he has production credit on? Can't be original works. When I was a kid in the age of physical media....we'd read album/song credits and see which records were "interpolated"...and who was listed as the song writers...original artist .If not listed....artist got sued...like Pharrell.

I'm sorry, I had beat digging friends...I went record hunting with them ...i recognize too many loops and samples to look at some of this new music the same anymore

2) Disco was black music, it was grown out of funk Niles Rogers has repeatedly tried to tell people this. There is a reason when they had the burn disco records nights they were just burning records with black faces on them. disco was just a artistic sprout from the root, and from disco you are birthed hiphop. So the critique against disco is a joke then and now, just like critqiues of most black forms of music when they are in their infancy.
3) MJ is a singer, a singer isn't an instrumentalist, he is a singer. MJ did produce classic hits, he produced thriller and bad and dangerous. If MJ isn't a producers because he told session musicians what to player thiin Quincy wasn't a producer because he didn't play every instrument in his orchestration but told session players what to play. Kanye can sample all he wants, he made original music in the end and changed the soundscape of music. thats an accomplishment, whether you choose to recognize it or not.
4) Yes he produced blurred lines and we know of the lawsuit, you can still read and see his works listed. That is his resume, blemishes and all.

Thats nice that you like digging for beats, it is irrelvant to the confersatoin and it doesn't take away from modern producers being producers are legends today.

Pharrell on the "woke" wave now. LOL

I remember reading the transcripts of that blurred lines deposition , man is a total fraud. Claims he can read music, can't read music, identify notes, or understand the concept of a chord. Then the man trying his damnedest to protect his white boy Robin Thicke. While Robin Thicke throws that dumb ass under the bus instantly when questioned.

:ohhh: I didn't know anything about this
