Africans participated in slavery and slave trades long before the first Portuguese came to African shores.

In the Peopling of Africa thread, I discuss how West Africa wasn't *that* isolated and participated in the Trans-Saharan slave trade for hundreds of years before the Trans-Atlantic trade eclipsed it.

When I say "isolation" I mean isolation from the world outside of Africa which West Africans for the most part were. Its only maybe Sahelian West Africans like those from the areas of Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and MAYBE Senegal and Guinea. But other than that prior to the Atlantic slave trade much of West Africa was isolated from the rest of the world especially coastal West Africans who were the big players in the slave trade.
