10 years is crazy tho. Seems so foreign for NFL deals. He went and got a baseball type deal on the surface.
Backload the deal - I'm sure they're anticipating the cap goes up/revenue sharing over the life of the contract. He'll still get paid as a high level contract but in 10 years the average annual value of the deal might not be too crazy.

Baseball contacts are guaranteed. There are 40+ baseball contacts in history with more guaranteed money than Mahomes' deal. He'll almost certainly get a lot more than the $140, but it's not guaranteed.
Jets wouldn't sign Waston if he was availablei hope Darnold doesn’t sign anything![]()
If you a brotha...i dont think he swing that way

I've been watching Mahomes since his Big XII days, torching my OU boys...
He is worth it! He is Peyton Manning level talent!
My dad gonna lose his shyt when he hears about this!!! Die hard Chiefs fan!
doesn't happen a lot. but the few times
If the Chiefs do re-sign Chris Jones, wouldn't be surprising to see his deal heavily front loaded the first 2 years since Mahomes' deal doesn't kick in until 2022. The cap might not rise much the next two years with the potential effects of COVID-19 on revenue but it's going to explode after 2022 when the NFL gets its new tv deal.Yep. Average annual value is really just boiling it down the simplest number. Most teams actually come out with MORE cap money right after they sign a player to a big extension.
Backload the contract so that the last years are insane (don't be surprised when we see a tweet saying something crazy like the chiefs would be paying Mahomes $80 mil in 2031, or something like that), and all or most of the guaranteed money issued as bonuses that don't hit the cap are in the first few years. Then, when it comes time for the rough years, they either cut the player, or sign them to a new extension/restructure to start the whole process over again.
I'm a bigger Peyton fan than most, but this. That's an insult to Mahomes. He's more talented than Payton and he didn't spend years choking in the playoffs.
