They might as well go down with the ship, they've already faced genocide by Russians in the past, that's what awaits them after the war.
I do agree with you that they face cultural extinction (a kind of genocide) if Russia completely conquers Ukraine.
But the 1930s famines in the USSR was not genocidal. Famines occurred in Soviet Kazakhstan, North Caucasus, the Volga Region, the Urals, and Siberia.
Also, the Soviets organized aid relief efforts in Ukraine once news reached Moscow.
The Soviet leadership, many of whom were ethnic Ukrainians, had nothing to gain by deliberately starving one of their most productive constituent states.
