Tips:

- Go to every class
- Review your notes everynight before sleep, even if only for a few min
- Make friends with the people who do well in the class, to study with
- Go to any specialized instruction/tutor groups you can
- Stay on top of your shyt and don't fall behind

Also, 2 was A LOT harder than 1 was for me. It's a lot more math intensive than the first part, which wasn't bad.

Thanks breh. Enjoy the rep.

The most underrated tip - read the textbook. Outline that bytch. Your retention goes through the roof.

Slighty off topic but I need to take Gen Chemistry 1 and 2 next year. I never needed chemistry in High School. If you guys took it do you have any tips? and is it really that hard?

Conversions, conversion and finally conversions.

The topics are not that hard but applying the math aspect to the concept is annoying as hell

I thought gen chem 2 was way easier than chem 1 :manny:

but I agree on those tips for someone who didn't take any Chem in HS

Got As in both I & II but if I were to be forced to go back and do them now, I'd probably flunk out of both. So glad I never have to do any B.Sc related work ever again.

I'm assuming you haven't taken real analysis (yet), otherwise you wouldn't be putting :win: at the end of that post :mjpls:

have you taken both organic chemistry and real analysis? :leon:
i've always wanted to see what a strong math major would think of pre-med classes... they're probably a joke in comparison right?

i mean most pre-meds are middle level students in any given college and math majors who take classes beyond and including real analysis probably have to be at the very top

not knocking medical students or pre-meds but 3.7 bio majors who do dumb student activities to get into med school and end up barely getting in are of a different breed than 4.0 math students who end up pursuing academic careers :mjpls:

I tutored a couple strong math majors in ochem II that struggled with ochem I.

It's pretty different, which is why a lot of people have problems with it. Organic isn't math based, at all (unless you want to delve into the pchem aspect, which isn't necessary for this class). There's a lot more relational/spacial reasoning than analytical.

it's all science though :smugfavre:
it's not like you're putting a math major in a musical performance or some shyt :pachaha:

my theory is that if you're good at math you should be good at anything scientific or quantitative (like quantitative social science, engineering, etc.) unless it's just too tedious for you and you hate it (in which case why would you even take it :skip:)

Starting the second half of organic this tuesday. First half was hard but I enjoyed it, I love how theres no math. Pchem would fukk me up big time probably. I felt bad for the other kids in the class, i knew they were trying to do good but still scoring well below 50 on exams. Seems like a subject that is all or nothing.

You're right in that math is at the top of the scientific hierarchy. It underpins everything. But good organic chemistry application is absolutely equal parts art and science. I mean, you do spend half the year drawing....

But you're right, kinda. If you're smart enough to get a math degree you can definitely learn organic chemistry. With the two math majors I tutored they just didn't know how to approach it. They both ended up with an A. One got a B and the other a C in ochem I.

I'm going to help you out. Memorize all the carbonyl reactions now. I mean it. The first test in ochem II is the worst of them all.

Got that A in pchem too :shaq: But it was my only class that semester, which helped.
