r = clockwise or arrow circling to the right
s= counterclockwise or arrow circling to the left (s for sinister or left)

have your lowest ranked attached atom eclipsed by the stereocenter and go from highest ranked to lowest ranked

so say,

.......H
HO- C-NH2
......CH3

imagine H to be in the back, eclipsed by the carbon and go from the highest ranked element to the next on to the last

How did u know to take O out of the HO, N out of the NH2 and C out of the CH3?

your circle here would go oxygen, nitrogen, carbon,

rotating to the right, R designation

Thanks man.

So pretty much is the element on the top that you always leave out when determining if it is clockwise or counter?

That was just a rough explanation, but that is the concept behind Fischer projections.

Fischer projection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You have to have the lowest ranked bond in the back for that standard r,s stuff.

If you do not have the lowest in the back, for whatever reason(this will come up eventually), then the designations are reversed.

spolier to reduce any potential confusion for now

GAHHH I'm so scared for Orgo  I did ok in Gen Chem after I got the hang of it but Math is NOT my strong point... and I don't even want to talk about Calculus...

Slighty off topic but I need to take Gen Chemistry 1 and 2 next year. I never needed chemistry in High School. If you guys took it do you have any tips? and is it really that hard?

Gen Chem seemed math heavy to me, so doing as many problems as possible always helped me more than taking extensive notes.

Man my Jr year I use to pop Nodoz the night before a test and still fail!! A lot of Biology majors switched to Psychology once they started taking chemistry

Man listen I took general chem, environmental chem, and organic chem. I also took low temperature chem and geochemistry of natural water in grad school. My advice is NEVER fall behind. The moment you do you fail. That's why so many people screw up. They treat that shyt like english class, on some "I'll make it up tomorrow". fukk that man that class takes precedence over eating. I basically ended up with a b+ and shyt the bed on my other classes.

- Doesnt remember or use half of the reactions i learned in that class.
- Works and does research in an organic chem lab :heh:

I do know a lot of concepts still because at the end of the day if you understand basic interactions between atoms and basic gen chem you can do anything in the field...and if you give me a reaction i can propose a mechanism that makes sense, as far as arrow pushing. But i don't have time to remember every single reduction or oxidation reaction in those classes, just the ones i use on a daily basis or the most common ones. Having said that, i need to learn them again so i dont look like a dumbass to my professors :sadbron:

Oh and that myth about if you can pass orgo 1 and 2 you can do med school. shyt gets sooo much harder than that bullshyt if you want to be a chemist or learn about systems.

EDIT: matter fact, you got any organic or just chemistry questions, holla at ya boy. I got you as best as i can. Help me keep sharp as well.

I personally found Organic Chemistry fascinating. It really is God's science. You should try and picture reactions visually to really understand it. Using the 3D models helps alot.

it is definitely much easier to handle if you chill and approach it like a game or puzzle rather than a bunch of lines on paper. those plastic 3d kits are indeed a lifesaver.
