well imagine if singletary or tomsula ran the defense...Id say it can definitely be worse than mangini, whom I clearly dont like.

mike v is fresh off being a linebacker...yeah everyone has to start somewhere, but I thought we're at a point we're chosing competent people with playcalling experiences, not someone for whom this job will be a 'try and see'

I don't know many other names out there though. It's not like we passed up a bonafide, surefire option for Vrabel. What Mangini did with those soft zones was borderline unforgivable to me, I see no reason to stick with him over Vrabel. We were the 29th ranked D last year, Mangini's experience didn't count for shyt.

thats a blanket statement though- I dont like the whole 'anyone will be better' statements, because history proves they arent true. now I dont like mangini and I want him gone, but why choose a DC without any experience ? even his positional coach experience is extremely limited.

like, what can you say about why vrabel in the first place ? tell me why someone who is looking for a DC for an inconsistent, rebuilding defense would go 'mike vrabel, yep thats our guy' ? again, I hate mangini, but I at least could say something about his defenses before last year. vrabel sounds like they pulled names from a hat

he has zero experience at DC, hes been a LB coach. how is that different from singletary or tomsula ?

I better not see the same people complaining about lack of last years coaching experience endorsing vrabel

I hope this instance of throwing shyt on the wall actually sticks, but Im pretty skeptical. Especially if supposedly Chip still brushes over defense like it aint important.

Yeah I don't think it was a "Mike Vrabel, that's our guy" thing, but rather a "Is there anyone out there better than Mangini? Ok, let's bring him in then" It's not an exciting move, but it might be a step in the right direction. Either way, Mangini didn't deserve to get the benefit of the doubt for another year imo. If there were names out there that were definitely better than Vrabel, I wouldn't like this move. But I don't think there were.

I was a big fan of Mangini but he was bad for the type of defense we were trying to run. It was way too complicated for a defense as young as ours. Furthermore it all amounted to essentially nothing. We were among the worst defenses in the league. Actually Singletary and Tomsula were considered among the leagues best at their respective places on the staff and were part of top 10 defenses, it's just they weren't saavy x's and o's guys. Like I said I don't know if Vrabel will be the answer, but he could be. We aren't exactly a destination team that we can attract former head coaches to coordinate.

Yeah, I'm not going at Vrabel, I'm going at Mangini leaving and at Vrabel coming. Skepticism is definitely warranted.

Mike Vrabel is raw as a coach but he is from the Parcels/Bill Belichick coaching tree which has historically been quite successful. Right or wrong the guy is on a fast track to being a head coach before 45, and he clearly must have differentiated himself from Mangini in the interview since, it seems we've had our eye on him before Chip Kelley was available.

Stud: Just missing out on a PFF All Pro selection, that shouldn’t diminish what a great year Weston Richburg had at the center spot.

Dud: Did he play hurt, or can you just attribute his struggles to being a rookie? Either way, Ereck Flowers didn’t provide the immediate upgrade the team had hoped for, and was our lowest-graded tackle on the year.

Summary: The injury to William Beatty caused a number of problems, with Flowers unprepared to play left tackle and Marshall Newhouse unequipped to play on the right side. That made a match of the worst tackle pairing in the league, and while the interior played well, it was nowhere near good enough to make up for it.
