32. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Top five players: OT Joe Staley, LB NaVorro Bowman, NT Ian Williams, DE Arik Armstead, LB Aaron Lynch

Starters who should be upgraded: LB Ahmad Brooks, OT Erik Pears, OC Daniel Kilgore, QB Blaine Gabbert, LB Michael Wilhoite, WR Quinton Patton

The 49ers aren’t far removed from having one of the league’s best rosters. They were once being complimented for being so loaded that they could essentially draft “redshirt” prospects like running back Marcus Lattimore. That depth — and talent — unraveled in a hurry and has not been helped by a series of retirements by some of their best players. DeForest Buckner has the potential to make an immediate impact and turn around the defensive front, but he’s only a rookie. The rest of the defense is in turmoil, too, with Bowman the only tried and tested performer. He was far from good a year ago despite racking up tackle numbers.

The offensive line, once the bedrock of the offense, is now really just Staley and a collection of below-average starters. Rookie Josh Garnett could add some quality eventually. At quarterback, Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick will battle, which speaks for itself as to how far the 49ers have fallen.

They say QT is looking good out there. I'm actually expecting him to have a good years next year. He showed promise last year :ehh:

I dont really get that quip by pff. hasnt it been kaep and gabbert the last 3 years ? how does that speak for itself. if its the same guys battling for the qb spot, how does that speak for anything ? just faulty logic imo

It's referring to how far Colin has fallen from playing in the super bowl to fighting a bust in gabbert for the job

I mean kaep has been playing worse but it was easy to see that it was going to be the case because of the team becoming shyt. kaep was never a top qb or anything. and gabbert turned out to be better than he was at jax :manny:

I dont think our qb situation is that bad. it can be upgraded, but I dont think its the top priority. you can win with kaep or gabbert if you have a top of the line defense and run game.

I always believe in the Bill Walsh philosophy that you can coach offense but you need athletes on defense. I believe the offense will either be average or top 12 in the league. The oline will be much better because what we had last year was a disgrace and the qb will follow in place.

Cornerbacks

Tremaine Brock - After being an UDFA in the 2010 draft, it's a testament to his work ethic and the coaching staff that he has developed into a solid starting corner. Yes he has a tendency to gamble and get burned when he misses but he has soft hands and the speed to cover the teams fastest receivers. He's also the only real veteran on the team which also counts for something. I expect another good year out of him, especially with an improved pass rush.

Grade: B

Jimmie Ward - It seems that the team is intent on making him a full time corner, which is fine by me. Towards the end of last season he began to show why he was seen as one of the best defensive backs in the draft. He was never a burner but he has really good 'on the field' speed and his rangy athleticism makes him a pesky guy for receivers to deal with. He also seems to have more fluid movements and he has a better feel for the ball even if he doesn't see it right away. Plus he can play safety if needed. But I expect he'll be the future of the Cornerbacks.

Grade: B

Kenneth Acker - For his first year as a starter Kennth Acker was impressive, he had 3 interceptions and 65 tackles. He may eventually overtake Brock's spot as he's a little taller, but I just think he needs to just get more snaps under him, which he'll do. This was definitely a draft steal and I think he'll be a long time player..

Grade: B-

Dontae Johnson - Another 2014 draft pick (which in retrospect is turning out to be a nice draft health permitting). He seems to be entrenched as the nickelback position. I think he can play well in limited snaps, but the longer he gets out there the less impressed I am with him. He has all the physical tools but he can get psyched out and burned. He can work on that with coaching but Acker may have more upside, imo. But then again, if nickel back is your floor that is not bad for a 4th rounder at all

Grade: C+

Rashard Robinson - He didn't play much football at LA State. But some say he is an extremely talented player. He clearly has the prototypical rangy build of the modern CB. But he needs to put on a few pounds and work on his tackling since he is going to be a liability against the run as it is.

Grade: C

Will Redmond - A promising rookie from Missippi State, and a member of the 49ers ACL team. I think he will be good enough to make special teams and eventually compete for snaps at the nickelback in a year or two. For now he's redshirted.

Grade: INC

Keith Reiser - It's ironic because a lot of people thought Reiser would be the better corner between him and Acker. I think he has a chance to contribute in special teams IF he has a clean bill of health. His biggest asset is his blazing speed because he doesn't really have the size and frame to be a form tackler/

Grade: C-

Prince Charles Iworah - I think he could surpise some people this year. I think he's more athlete than football player, but he could have a career as a return man or just be a standout special teams player.

Marcus Cromartie - Works primarily in special teams and is training to become a safety, I don't think that will save him from being cut though.

Grade: D

Chris Davis - A camp body. Nothing to see here.

Grade: F

Unit Analysis: Some of the draft picks of the past couple of years are starting to converge and become a force. If the pass rush is improved then these guys will benefit. We've invest a lot of draft capital so it's important we see these guys play as much as possible for them to develop. We were around the middle of the league in defense last year and that was with Eric Mangini's overly complicated schemes. I expect them to be better under Jim O'Neil.
