DEFENSE

Left defensive end (Arik Armstead): Had 19 tackles and two sacks as a rookie last year.

Nose tackle (Ian Williams): A force in the middle but might not be ready for opener after offseason ankle surgery.

Right defensive end (DeForest Buckner): Seventh overall pick in the draft had 67 defensive pressures in final college season.

Outside linebacker (Eli Harold): Will hold down the spot until Aaron Lynch completes four-game NFL suspension.

Outside linebacker (Ahmad Brooks): Has tied for the team lead in sacks each of the past three seasons.

Inside linebacker (NaVorro Bowman): Led the NFL in tackles one year after serious ACL injury.

Inside linebacker (Gerald Hodges): Made 39 tackles over final four games of 2015.

Cornerback (Tramaine Brock): Has to be looking over his shoulder after offseason trade rumors and the addition of three DBs in the draft.

Cornerback (Jimmie Ward): First-round pick in 2014 was in and out of the starting lineup in 2015.

Safety (Antoine Bethea): He was a 2014 Pro Bowl pick but missed nine games in '15 because of a torn pectoral muscle.

Safety (Eric Reid): Coming off a down year after making a combined seven interceptions in 2013 and 2014.

Punter (Bradley Pinion): Second-year punter tied for sixth with 31 punts inside the 20-yard line.

Kicker (Phil Dawson): The 41-year-old is third among active kickers with 457 career field goals.

Long-snapper (Kyle Nelson): Has not missed a game since taking over in 2014.

KR/PR (Bruce Ellington): Averaged 7.2 yards on punt returns and 25.6 on kickoff returns.

49ers could be without Ian Williams when season opens vs. Rams

Defensive Line

Nose Tackes -

Ian Williams - Albeit a little small to be a traditional nose tackle, he packs a big punch as he's able to burst through offensive lines and disrupt the run and be in asset in the pass rush. Unfortunately he hasn't been able to stay healthy. He was in line for big contract until he failed a physical. I like him a lot and he's only turning 27, if he can be productive this year, I could see him on a nice team friendly contract. But if his ankles are made of cardboard, then we may have to move on from him.

Grade: B

Mike Purcell - A surprise if their ever was. A practice squad guy, had a very impressive preseason last year, and a decent regular season as well. I expect that he will ultimately usurp Glenn Dorsey on the depth chart if not this year, than definitely by next. At only 25, he's shown to have a good motor, he's worked in the weightroom and seems to be a high effort guy in general. This guy is an late/undrafted gem that Baalke has been good at finding. He could be a rotation guy for a long time.

Grade: C+

Garrison Smith - A young player from Georgia, I think they think he could be a diamond in the rough, but he has to play with better leverage and get in better shape. I expect his first year to be on the practice squad.

Grade: F

Defensive End/Tackles

Arik Armstead - I think this kid is going to be one of the future beasts of this defense. He has freakish size and athleticism for a defensive end. On the snaps he has played so far, he already affects the game even if he doesn't get the tackle/sack. He has a tendency to sometimes over pursue, but that's coachable. His upside is incredible and as long as he keeps his head on straight and stay healthy, he'll have a decade long career and some pro-bowls.

Grade: B

DeForest Buckner - I expect he'll be the other bookend on the line. As a high profile 1st round draft pick, I thought he was the best D-Lineman in the draft. He's almost the exact same size as Armstead, even though I think Armstead is a better athlete. I'll say this Buckner is a more complete football player than Armstead coming out, so I expect him to be a potential DROY. I expect these two to work and bring out the best in each other.

Grade: B+

Tank Carradine - I've expected this guy to break out for 2 seasons now, I don't think he ever will be an elite player, but it's clear he was playing out of position last year, and they have wisely made him gain back his original weight, and is putting him back on the line as an edge rusher. If he can be a 3rd down specialist, I'm ok with that.

Grade: C+

Glenn Dorsey - A reclamation project from the 2008 draft, Gleen Dorsey has turned out to be a really nice addition to the team, again good at run stopping, he's not much of pass rusher anymore,as his athleticism was never his strong point. This is probably the last year of his prime (and maybe on the team). As we have younger, healthier players. He's versatile enough to backup as an end or as a nose.

Grade: C+

Quenton Dial - Even though he is a massive guy, at 6'5 320 pounds, he will be working more so as a defensive end and specialist. He's versatile enough to play any position on the line, and even though he plays a bit high he's a very good run stopper. He'll get snaps one way or another.

Grade: C+

Tony Jerrod Eddie - Even though there are always rumors about trading him, he's a good special teamer and decent when asked to play defensive snaps. But there may be players with more upside that could cost him his job

Grade: C-

Ronald Blair - Reminds me a bit of Ray McDonald, a 5th rounder, who with a little time in the weight room and on the track could develop into a good rotational edge rusher. He has flashes of considerable talent but is not particularly athletic, and needs to be in better shape. We'll see how he does in camp though.

Grade: D

Darren Lake - I think he'll be a camp body, I think the most he can be is a rotational Nose Tackle but there are better players up the depth chart.

Demetrius Cherry - A very raw defensive tackle from Arizona State. I expect he'll be on the practice squad as he develops into an NFL ready talent.

Grade: F

Kaleb Ramsey - Dude got popped last year for popping banned substances, but even then, I can't see him making even the practice squad, he's already 27, and he has no real value whatsoever, imo.

Grade: F

Unit Analysis: We have a lot of youth on this line, and I also think there is a lot of talent. Jim O'Neil is a young mind and may be able to revitalize a somewhat sagging line. Also alot of the young guys have another year of experience and that's something to be excited about. Now I think we have the weakest D-Line in the division but that doesn't mean we're bad per se, it's all these teams have established Pro-Bowlers or otherwise near elite players. But if we can show the ability to not get knocked around in the running game in some games and consistently pressure QBs, we may have something.

Kaep is perfect for Chips goofy ass system, i dont know why they are anti-kaep. Chip turned Nick Foles into a 27-2 QB...people bytch about the Bradford season, and I agree (as an eagles fan)...but Bradford was a statue...guy couldnt move, and Chip traded away his whole team trying to start over. It was a horrendous offense season, and its cause Chip got a little too cocky

I just dont see why they dont let Kaep run Chips offense

I think the thought process is if Chip can do that with Foles and Bradford (whom I think sucked) he can do wonders with Gabbert whom seems to have impressed many from his play last year. :beli:

Gabbert is athletic though. He won't be a statue back there.

I see Gabbert getting the nod basically because he is "steady" and seems to have the juice right now. Kaep IMO is still the better fit, but I'm certain whoever starts...the backup will see playing time.
