Tight Ends

Vance McDonald - Despite having hands of stone, Vance has managed to stay on the roster, in part due to the fact he is an excellent blocker. He has elite size you look for and he is a very good athlete. Even though he only catches 25% of his passes, he avg 11 yards minimum. He clearly seems to have turned a corner last year and Chip Kelly loves Tight Ends. Remember Vernon Davis didn't break out until his 4th year, so I expect this year to be the same for Vance. If not we may look to keep him as a #2 at most or move on from him for more consistent perfomers.

Grade: B-

Garrett Celek - Albeit no where near as talented as his brother Brent, he has made himself a nice living being a 2nd or 3rd TE. He's doesn't excel at any one thing, but he's pretty good at everything. He's a lunchpail guy who's kept his head down and will be no worse than #2 this year and maybe moving forward.

Grade: C+

Bruce Miller - I think he was one of the best all purpose fullbacks in the league, I find it odd that's Chip Kelly is transitioning him to TE. I expect him to be used as an H-Back role which he is a good enough blocker and catcher to do, but he works best an unexpected surprise than a much larger and more integral role. We'll see though.

Grade: INC Projected C+ though

Blake Bell - In his 2nd year, Blake Bell doesn't have the talent of McDonald, but I think is being set up to take over in the case Vance doesn't work out, they are built similarly but Blake is taller but has neither Vance's athleticism or skill in blocking. He can improve on the latter, and show he can catch the ball with more consistency, he'll be a longtime player on the team. He can be a redzone threat as well at 6'6.

Grade: C

Busta Anderson - An intriguing prospect from South Carolina. He is not the best athlete and cannot block at all but he can run routes like a WR and can play the short game in the league, he's on the bubble but I think we stash him in case the other 3 guys get hurt.

Grade: D+

Je'Ron Hamm - He could be a H-Back in Chip Kelly's system but I'd argue he's the worst kind of tweener, not fast enough to be a WR and too small to be a TE. But I expect he'd could be a developmental prospect or potential special teams contributor.

Grade: F

Unit Analysis: This is another case where we have a lot of unproven talent but a lot of potential. Chip Kelly likes to get them heavily involved in the game though, so I expect them all to be more productive. I don't expect more than 3 TEs on the active roster though. This is another wait and see.

Unit Grade: C
