Wide Receivers
Torrey Smith - Torrey Smith is going to be the #1 receiver, no doubt but I never saw him as a true #1. He's definitely a deep threat and a speedy straight line receiver. He has a somewhat limited route tree which is troubling at this point in his career, and he's not a great blocker. That being said I think he had a really good year aside from the injuries. He'll be a huge beneficiary of Chip Kelly's offense, he's still fairly young, and he has the breakaway speed Michael Crabtree never had. I expect a huge year from him, believe it or not
Grade: B
Eric Rodgers - The prototypical WR we have been asking for the past 7 years. A big strong 6'3 receiver. I watched him play some of games in Canada and he was a man amongst boys, a great route runner great body control, soft hands and fluid motion. He could end up the #1 but I think it will be Torrey Smith to start the season. just based of chemistry. I'm excited to see what he can do as a 49er
Grade: B-
Jerome Simpson - I think a few years out of trouble will benefit Jerome Simpson, he's going to be in the mix to be the #2 receiver and he may win out, or he may get cut, it's tough to say. He has burnout speed too but he has hard hands and it not a great catcher. But he is a veteran and I expect him to stay on the roster barring a bad preseason.
Grade: C-
Bruce Ellington - I believe that he will settle in as the slot receiver. He can return kicks, but he wasn't as good as I expected him to be at that. I still think he is an explosive weapon with the ball in his hands and his unique build (more runningback than receiver) makes him dangerous in the open field. He needs to work on his hands. I expect him to have something of a breakout year as well, and he's going to need to, otherwise receiver will be a top priority come next years draft.
Grade: C+
Quinton Patton - This is a make or break year for Patton. He clearly has considerable talent at the receiver position but dumb mistakes make me question his football IQ. Chip Kelley and staff may be able clean it up and salvage a career, but he needs to have his head on straight or he'll be on the bottom of the depth chart here or elsewhere and there are a quite a few intriguing young prospects.
Grade: C-
DeAndre Smelter - I'm interested to see what he can do healthy. He could be a late round steal if he can make the roster. Worst case we stash him on the practice squad.
Grade: D+
Bryce Treggs - A speedy receiver at Cal, he may have a future as a return man, I just think the WR corps is too crowded for offensive snaps.
Grade: D
Aaron Burbidge - A big tough receiver from Michigan, I believe he'll be on the practice squad, but he's an intriguing prospect. He projected as a 4th-5th rounder, but I think his lack of speed hurts him in the pro game. He is a very good route runner though so I expect him to be a project.
Grade: D-
Devon Cajuste - There seems to be some fanfare about this guy, apparently a gifted student, he has intriguing size, but I expect him to be stashed on the practice squad. He is going to have to transition to being a TE to have a chance at making it imo.
Grade: D-
DeAndrew White - I think he's gonna get cut, he's quick but he lacks the size to make to make in the NFL, imo.
Grade: F
DiAndre Cambell - Another practice squad guy, I believe this is the last year we can stash him away.
Grade F
Unit Analysis: We have a lot of young or unproven talent after the 3 obvious starters. This will make for a hotly contested scramble for what is likely only 3 or 4 spots max. This isn't a bad thing for what is essentially a rebuilding team. I want to see what Chip Kelly does with these guys.
Unit Grade: C+
