The only edge rushers are available in fa, this defense isn't suited for the 4-3 right now. Might as well trade armstead because he has no role in a 4-3

Why does he have no role in a 4-3? Simply because he never played in it before. Look at dudes measurables and raw ability it's hard to think he could not transition.

I think this defense is more suited for a 4-3 than a 3-4, we don't have the LB's to put out a 3-4, only 2 LB's have proven to be worth a damn

The 49ers head into the free-agent signing period with more than $60 million in cap space.

The 49ers’ salary cap was adjusted to $176.58 million, the NFL Players Association announced on Monday. That number includes the league-wide $155.27 salary cap, plus the 49ers’ $12.2 million carryover from last year and an adjustment of $9.1 million.

The adjustment comes from unclaimed bonus money that counted against last year’s cap. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick did not claim $875,000 in per-game roster bonuses due to seven games on injured reserve. Safety Antoine Bethea missed out on $225,000 in per game roster bonuses.

The 49ers’ top 51 players account for $114.17 million in salary cap space for the 2016 season, according to overthecap.com, leaving the team with $62.41 million in cap space entering the new league year. Beginning on Wednesday with the new league year until the final cuts before the start of training camp, only each team’s top-51 players count against the cap.

With their adjusted cap of $176.58 million, the 49ers have the third-highest cap in the league behind Jacksonville ($190.3 million) and Cleveland ($176.7 million).

3rd most cap space in the league. We need to not fawk this opportunity up.

it doesn't work like that :comeon:

look at revis with the bucs. he's one of the greatest CBs ever but he had a "down year" because they wanted him to play a passive zone defense, seattle wanting jimmy graham to play as a traditional pass blocking TE, the redskins trying to turn haynesworth into a two-gap DT, philly wanting namdi to play zone/safety at times or demarco murray running in an inside zone scheme with philly instead of outside.

armstead is a 5-technique DE which is best for a 3-4 (they control the blocker in front of them and stop runs on either gap on his side). he doesn't have the speed or explosiveness to be a 4-3 DE or pass rusher.

hopefully the 9ers throw big bucks at malik jackson. he's an impact player and fills a huge need for us. i'm don't like spending big bucks on CBs since there's a lot of factors that affect their performance but sean smith is someone worth paying since we have the cap space. those two alone can probably put us back close to a top ranked defense.

I don't know how the talent looks in the draft but I was thinking today that even though out D is obviously ahead of our offense at this point we should still continue to stockpile and load up as many high upside defensive players as we can get this year and focus almost entirely on defense in the draft. I feel like making the defense better and inching it up closer and closer to elite status gets us more wins then slowly inching our offense towards mediocrity. They're already gonna be on the field a lot thanks to the Chip Kelly offense so we're gonna need to be deep word to Rhianna and just hope we can bring in some FA this year to help Chip work his magic on offense.

I know its still early and its not Baalke's M.O. but it would be nice to see them make a splash in free aency. It's not like I want them to overpay for someone, but shyt I just want to get excited about something :shaq2:

Guess they'll sign some second and third tier free agents :francis:

you expected something different :mjcry49ers:
