The problem is not the nba or basketball it’s the racist cacs. As In every aspect of American Life, racist cacs have to be catered to. Unfortunately stern worked hard to appeal to them and appease them.

That’s why we got the dress code, euro ball , changing rules to allow more offense etc
Cacsketball. It's been an issue.

BRING BACK THE THUG ERA fakkit ASS SUBURBAN MY DAD WAS A PRO ATHLETE LEAGUE nikkaS TODAY fukk
OUTTA HERE NEED THAT LENNY COOKE THIS ALL I GOT shyt!!!

This is where shıt gets interesting though. Everyone raves about todays athletes, their athleticism, the fact that teams' benches are deeper, and that roster spots are no longer taken up by plumbers and mailmen.

Those of you who wants the thoroughbred of tomorrow to run even faster, well nothing improves without $$$, so the players who can afford all the things at a younger age to be those thoroughbreds are the ones who will be those uber-athletic, bigger, stronger, faster, more skilled athletes of tomorrow. You know how you can afford those things as a youngster? By having well off parents.

Conversely, you can't wish for the return of the blue collar athlete without understanding that that comes with a lesser polished, lesser refined, lesser taught athlete who's a step slower, not as quick, not as explosive, not as skilled, not as fundamentally sound, and doesn't have the court IQ as the young kids today who have a more white collar upbringing. Just like in education where wealthier parents can employ tutors, wealthier parent of young athletes can employ trainers, nutritionists, private coaches, and have their kids playing and mastering a sport year round.

You can't have both. The contemporary economic landscape of American youth sports won't allow it.

Everything has changed and once those changes take root at the level of children, you can say adios to the old way of doing things and you might as well not even concern yourself on how it was, because "was" ain't ever becoming "is" ever again.

I agree the problem is nasty ass cacs. But that thinking fell to middle class white America (who are racist as well, but maybe more subconsiuosy or silently) as well.

So Stern realized the last time that was the perception, the league almost went broke and become defunct. He had to take action. He didn't have Magic, Bird and Jordan to save him this time. He had stars, but they all had issues for the bad. He was saved this time by taking action and LeBron and Wade falling into his lap.

This is why I give credit to Adam Silver too. He did walk into a fortunate situation, but at the end of the day, the game still appeals to most of America even if social media has made highlight culture more prevalent. He also doesn't try and appease racist cacs, he's made it clear the leagues view on social justice and this wouldn't be possible if the league wasn't increasing profits all the time because you know that's the only way those rich old cac owners would allow that message. This isn't even mentioning international growth.
Silver definitely tries to appeal to cacs but he knows he can't appeal to the GOP cac.

What happened is exactly what's happening in this thread.. You had one set of fans who hated the way the game was played and the other who had been waiting to see it played like this all their life. And both people are correct

MJ retired and although MJ is NOW seen as an a$$hole, drinking, partying, wilding, cussing MJ... Back then he was safe as Disney.. He played the right way even though he was so ruthless and people inside, knew it. To the public, MJ winning those last 3 was just heaven. Perfect.. Black, white, fan, league, perfect...

Soon as he retired, all the names you listed in this thread started being the forefront. fukk a suit, XXXXXL tees and baggy jeans... Cornrows with designs, baggy uniforms, cussing, flashy, gunning shots, iso ball, tatts, 360 windmills, all of it.. Black people really loved it. Street ball was coming to the NBA. The streets was shining. Everybody had a throwback jersey. And 1 tourneys. Killer crossovers.. Stuart Scott highlights on sportscenter in the am. Jadakiss sneaker videos. Fights, gang members, beating up fans,

White people were in shock. This ain't Mike. We don't want our kids acting like this. What the fukk is this palming shyt? Where's the beautiful game? Oh my god they're beating up fans????

NBA ratings went down, the MASSES were sick of the new NBA. But the masses of america are what? Black america was buying up everything NBA. We wasn't even talking NFL like that. All the rappers was around NBA players. All the NBA players were all up in the videos.. Hell, putting out rap albums. NBA said no no no no no and put in so many damn rules to shut that shyt down, you'd think it was a conspiracy. But they had to protect their brand and so they did.

But nah.. It wasn't one way over the other. It was a mix of all that, that lead to the NBA saying "get these nikkas up out of here"

I agree with most but we were still fukkin with the NBA. McNabb and especially Vick were them dudes. There were some black QBs coming in (Vick, McNabb, even America's Team had a black black QB for one season, Quincy Carter, Kordell, Aaron Brooks , Steve McNair, coming through at that time and running backs were still featured. )

Last era where nikkas could throw hands

Yo, this is so true. I think of shyt from that era thinking, "Did that really happen?" Like the way Shaq let off with those big looping punches and shyt.....having a superstar of Shaq's caliber punching like that would be a HUGE story today, back then it was just sorta a thing.

Now do you think this is specific to basketball in America?

Because in most other countries, in most other sports...the best athletes do not come from a white collar background.

Then I guess it's indeed specific to basketball in America.

Thanks for asking me a question and providing the answer. You're a good egg, @Remote :smugbiden:

Except there's one thing missing. You forgot to mention that the European model has kids in sports academies at a young age and that those kids are playing against high level competition throughout their development. So in that sense there is a comparison to be made between AAU & the European sports academies in regards to competition levels and time expended on their sport.

Now I fully admit to not knowing the specifics of how those European academies are run nor the socioeconomic demographics of their attendees because both of those pieces of information have about as much impact on my life as the color of porcupine dung, but I do know that a straight up 1 to 1 comparison between how American youth athletics are ran vs European youth athletics probably isn't the best way to view this topic.

I mean I would agree that these days, the AAU stuff has practically ruined high school basketball - which is where I suspect most of the blue collar kids showed off and developed their skills in the past. And the kids who get put on those AAU teams, or high profile academies, tend to come from better situations...or they are identified and sponsored at a very young age.

In America anyway, it's probably like this for basketball, soccer and to a lesser degree, even baseball now.

In other words, youth sports are now under the "money talks and BS walks" umbrella.

To that I say to youth sports: "Welcome to the rest of American society. Put your coat on the rack and lemme show you around the place."

Early 2000s NBA is the best era of the NBA

Teams still made an effort to defend...there were so many great individual talents (Kobe, AI, Vince, T-Mac, etc...) that brought flair to the game

No one complained too much offense like today or too much defense like the mid-00s

The problem the media had was that hip hop took over the NBA by the early 00s...hence why they eventually changed the dress code

Baggy shorts, tats, headbands, and swag...that was the early 2000s...my fav era of pure basketball in the Association

This right here. Not ironic at all that some of the best and most diverse and creative video games came from this same era. NBA Street 1-3 directly reflected the feel of that era of the NBA and general society.
