My favorite era of basketball becuase I was a kid and the star level was unmatched. T Mac, Kobe, Shaq, A.I were must see everynight. Then a few years later Bron, Melo, Dwade got drafted which filled the league up with even more stars.

I will say though it wasn’t perfect like many act like it was, those east conference playoff games were some shyt, final score would be 74-71….

Early 2000s NBA is the best era of the NBA

Teams still made an effort to defend...there were so many great individual talents (Kobe, AI, Vince, T-Mac, etc...) that brought flair to the game

No one complained too much offense like today or too much defense like the mid-00s

The problem the media had was that hip hop took over the NBA by the early 00s...hence why they eventually changed the dress code

Baggy shorts, tats, headbands, and swag...that was the early 2000s...my fav era of pure basketball in the Association

Basically. Media and mainstream didn't really like the new style that the AIs Sheeds etc ushered in and it was their league now...gone were the days when MJ was dominating.

That period was intense. Great talents, rivalries, Kobe AI T-Mac Lebron Melo, come on man. Obviously there was trash teams and games too, but every era has that.

Fond memories even if it was inefficient in retrospect. I was also a teen then. The spurs pistons struggle ball era was rough though. 7 ssol suns saved it

NC A&T SU, Hornets, Panthers, North Carolina
I look at it as the worst era of the NBA
ISO Ball was running rampant
AI was fun but he won the MVP shooting 43%
The Lakers really had no competition other than the Spurs
So little competition that Shaq would come to camp out of shape every year
The Spurs and Pistons were boring
USA Basketball was in shambles

a magical era for basketball so many classic moments especially cuz my Lakers were the dons of that era. Redeem Team, Artest in the stands, Kobe droppin 81, AI's popularity, MJ coming back, the arrival of Lebron, Some of the best ASGs. Def the best dunk contest. That was the era when I was most invested in emotionally. It was always a discussion in school. It permeated to music, entertainment, fashion and sneakers. Popularity wasn't down...maybe ratings were but I think that had moreso to do with the TV deals. College Bball was lit, Streetball was at its peak. The league had plenty of stars. To me this is more revisionist history that unwarranted nostalgia.

More flair but horrible efficiency . And1 mixtape culture was big
The dunk contest was fun with Vince, TMac, JRich, Stevie Franchise.
Rockin' jerseys was the thing back then.
I remember the Clippers were the coolest team that never won anything. Their jerseys were dope
The thug perception was at an all time high

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
I'm not sure I agree.

It couldn't be that the plodding, slow-paced game became unappealing to fans in America. It must have been some calculated business conspiracy to expand the game to white Americans and Europeans?

Somehow I think the 1st explanation is the most plausible.
What happened is exactly what's happening in this thread.. You had one set of fans who hated the way the game was played and the other who had been waiting to see it played like this all their life. And both people are correct

MJ retired and although MJ is NOW seen as an a$$hole, drinking, partying, wilding, cussing MJ... Back then he was safe as Disney.. He played the right way even though he was so ruthless and people inside, knew it. To the public, MJ winning those last 3 was just heaven. Perfect.. Black, white, fan, league, perfect...

Soon as he retired, all the names you listed in this thread started being the forefront. fukk a suit, XXXXXL tees and baggy jeans... Cornrows with designs, baggy uniforms, cussing, flashy, gunning shots, iso ball, tatts, 360 windmills, all of it.. Black people really loved it. Street ball was coming to the NBA. The streets was shining. Everybody had a throwback jersey. And 1 tourneys. Killer crossovers.. Stuart Scott highlights on sportscenter in the am. Jadakiss sneaker videos. Fights, gang members, beating up fans,

White people were in shock. This ain't Mike. We don't want our kids acting like this. What the fukk is this palming shyt? Where's the beautiful game? Oh my god they're beating up fans????

NBA ratings went down, the MASSES were sick of the new NBA. But the masses of america are what? Black america was buying up everything NBA. We wasn't even talking NFL like that. All the rappers was around NBA players. All the NBA players were all up in the videos.. Hell, putting out rap albums. NBA said no no no no no and put in so many damn rules to shut that shyt down, you'd think it was a conspiracy. But they had to protect their brand and so they did.

But nah.. It wasn't one way over the other. It was a mix of all that, that lead to the NBA saying "get these nikkas up out of here"

It was trashed by cacs. In real time nikkas loved that era....Kobe, AI, Tmac, Vince, Bron, Wade, Melo, etc were all hot topics of discussion every day.

Ratings were down because it was post-MJ and hard to replicate.....also cacs and media ran with the NBA players were thugs bullshyt.
Maybe it’s because I was a kid but I definitely thought the nba was great in the 2000s

this is exactly the answer
2000s were pretty good to amazing

people hated when Kobe and Shaq dominated .... the media used them against eachother to fukk up what they had
almost every team had some wild ass dude who would make the games interesting
teams were diverse and different all around
competitiveness was still a thing and teams hated eachother

Kobe's era was very flashy and ruthless... every team wanted to destroy or embarass the others to a point where the star would have to leave
I think T-Mac is a perfect example of this too... with how amazing T-mac was ... nikkas were at his neck regardless
you know secretly when Brandon Roy went out ... nikkas were like :takedat: ... Shaq was still trying to physically hurt other big men to prove a point.

Nash and Dirk were trying to make a name in Dallas by abusing cats. Spurs were a force and rotating great defensive players around the big 3 they had. Standout teams like Wizards and GS at the time had legs and athleticism to run you out the gym if you didnt put them away. You still had Stephon Marbury etc

low score was cool with me... I wanna see nikkas get hard buckets and work for theirs. No spacing and wide open YMCA jumpshots. It was a good evolution from the 90s era, where they just added more flash.

This article is in line with what you guys are saying :mjpls: Guess this was one of the real reasons NBC let the NBA go @-DMP- @FAH1223 @SchoolboyC @10bandz.

Was the NBA too black for NBC?

A September 25, 2001 piece by Variety writer John Dempsey on the upcoming NBA television negotiations featured a stunning series of quotes:

Less shocking, but more bold than Dempsey’s quote was this statement:
