There's an interview with U-God somewhere where he states that he liked hanging with Rza because Rza was a nerd when he was a teenager... they might be playing it up a bit too much for the screen, but he was probably the meekest one of the crew that Divine n'em looked for because he had smarts.

Gza hipping him to the universal language probably helped him find those leadership qualities.
