Yeah, I know that there's a risk of players getting hurt but other major sports leagues in America (except the NFL obviously) has taken that risk at the Olympics. The NBA, NHL and WNBA take that risk but they have allowed their players to participate in the Olympics. They know what it means to the players and it's a chance to grow the game.

Baseball is declining in popularity here in the US. However, they have a chance to grow the game both here and around the world by allowing the top players to participate in the Olympics.
NBA and WNBA don’t do it in season. Baseball for a long time would play series against Japan where the best players would go (next year will be the next one). The pitching they used to send was elite. The difference was that it was after the season.

The WNBA does do it in season. Right now, the WNBA season is on an Olympic break. Once the Olympics are over, the WNBA season starts back up. That's how they've always done it. The NHL does the same thing too (except in 2018 but they are planning to be back for 2022 & 2026).

The NBA doesn't do it in season (they almost did this year) but it's still a risk for injury for the players.

Correction. WNBA has Olympic breaks. That said they have more leeway to extend their season. They can start earlier, end later. They have more wiggle room.

The NHL and MLB have the same problem, but the NHL is another sport where they have more leeway than baseball does (they're not battling the elements and baseball players are treated more delicately)

the WBC was created to avoid all that stuff (I wish it didn't have so many restrictions, but that's as good as it gets. Everyone who wants to go can go)

Maybe, there can be an agreement where none of the #1 starting pitchers goes to the Olympics but starters #2-4 can go. Also, all position players can participate in the Olympics as well.

Or that top MLB pitchers only pitch 2-3 innings per Olympic game. That's something that could be worked out.

When did China become such a weightlifting powerhouse?
China has been picking a lot of the individual sports than have been neglected by a large majority of the countries and investing money into them for hopes of gold. Smart planning to be honest, where sports that are not the big 4 aren’t cared for

Like another poster said, China is focusing strictly on getting the most golds. They have put together a program to focus on the sports that traditionally were not strong holds for other countries, pour lots of resources into developing athletes in those sports, and hopefully win gold.
