The streets need that Kite-Man appearance.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” alum Michael Rooker is in talks to play King Shark in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” an individual with knowledge of the project exclusively told TheWrap.
The sequel to 2016’s “Suicide Squad” will hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021. Peter Safran and Charles Roven are producing.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” director Gunn was brought on board in January to helm the project. He wrote the script and will have a completely new take on the property, in which DC supervillains are recruited by the government to carry out secret missions too dirty for the likes of Superman and Batman.
The role continues Rooker’s long professional relationship with Gunn; the actor has appeared in every feature film directed by Gunn, including his portrayal of Yondu Udonta in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, as well as the Gunn-produced films “The Belko Experiment” and “Brightburn.”
Created by Karl Kesel in 1994, the supervillain King Shark is a humanoid shark and the son of Chondrakha, the God of all Sharks. Introduced as a Superboy villain, King Shark has been a member of the Secret Six, the Secret Society of Super-Villains and the Suicide Squad.
“Suicide Squad” was directed and written by David Ayer and starred Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jared Leto, Ezra Miller, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Cara Delevingne and Joel Kinnaman.
It grossed $325 million domestically and almost $750 million worldwide, although it was mostly panned by critics.
Rooker just wrapped production on Sony’s “Fantasy Island” and was recently seen opposite Mahershala Ali in season three of HBO’s “True Detective.” Next up, Rooker will star alongside Dylan O’Brien in “Monster Problems,” for Paramount Players. Rooker will play the role of Clyde, a seasoned hunter who teaches O’Brien’s character how to survive the Monster Apocalypse.
Ant-Man actor David Dastmalchian is headed over to the DC universe
Dastmalchian has closed a deal to star in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, with sources saying he will play the comic book villain Polka-Dot Man.
The actor now joins Margot Robbie, who is returning as villain turned sometime heroine Harley Quinn; Jai Courtney, back as Captain Boomerang; and Idris Elba, who was initially set to take on the role of Deadshot before a script change saw it evolve into a new, undisclosed part.
Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker Gunn is writing and directing The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. The pic follows David Ayer's 2016 film Suicide Squad, but rather than a straight sequel, the project is described as a new take on the property from the mind of Gunn that will feature a mix of new and old characters.
Plot details are being kept secret, but the new characters include DC villains such as Ratcatcher (she controls rats), Peacemaker (he loves peace so much he will kill for it), King Shark (would you believe us if we told you it's a humanoid shark?) and last, but certainly not least, Polka-Dot Man.

EXCLUSIVE: We’re also hearing that Nathan Fillion will be starring in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad at Warner Bros.
The actor’s role is being kept under wraps. Fillion has a long history of working with Gunn: He played the voice of a monstrous inmate in Guardians of the Galaxy, Bill Pardy in Gunn’s 2006 horror comedy Slither, and the Holy Avenger in the filmmaker’s 2010 pic Super.
Fillion stars in ABC’s The Rookie, which starts its second season on Sept. 29. Prior to that, Fillion starred for eight seasons as mystery novelist Richard “Rick” Castle on ABC’s Castle. His credits include a number of series, such as Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet and A Series of Unfortunate Events. Fillion is renowned for his turn as Captain Malcolm ‘Mal’ Reynolds on Joss Whedon’s cult sci-fi series, Firefly, which also spawned the feature movie Serenity.
