Jason Bateman just really wanted Cynthia Orivo on this show so they cast her as Holly.

There was a show (not sure if it's still on or not) based on the Bill Hodges trilogy of books called Mr. Mercedes that featured the Holly Gibney character and she was white on that show like she is in the books:

S3 just came out last year lol but Holly is kinda different in Mr. Mercedes. Unlike Erivo's version, she's scared to date, doesn't like people touching her and freaks out a lot. She's nothing like the super detective in this show
