I have never watched Once Upon A Time in America? Is it worth watching? I loved The Irishman, Goodfellas, and Casino. Since I loved all three of those movies will I like Once Upon A Time in America?

Once Upon A Time is a great movie. You just gotta be in the mood for it. Dialogue heavy and it's from the early 80s, so the pacing is much slower than today's movies.

I definitely enjoyed it though, watched it for the first time like two months ago.

This is just a general statement, but I see people saying :damn: "what happened to good cinema, why can't they make movies like this any more?!"

Which is :gucci: because I've been singing the praises of foreign cinema since SOHH. It's one of the main reasons I was picked to be a mod for this sub-forum.

Now, if you're specifically talking about mob flicks....yeah. Those are mostly dead. And the mob (as depicted in these movies, anyway) is specific to America.
But if your primary source of movies is what Hollywood churns out....:mjlol:

My pick of the year (which could change, haven't seen this movie yet) is "Parasite" by Bong Joon-ho. It did get a very limited theatrical release but it was "out" months prior to that.

Anyway, I'm sort of rambling but cinema is fine. Always has been. Some of you cats just gotta stop acting like the local cinemaplex is the be-all-end-all when it comes to movies.

Fred.

Can you give me a list of some great foreign films? I'm a drama and action/thriller aficionado (murder mysteries are cool too).

Who was more corrupt, Hoffa or the Kennedy family? Back in the day was hoffa viewed as evil and corrupt by most of america?

The Kennedy's, by far. What they did to the mob after the mob helped them win the election was the definition of some phuk shyt.

Do I think they should have helped the mob once they got into office? No. But to specifically target them for destruction was some real treacherous shyt.

:ohhh:The arm? explain please …. :jbhmm:
During the scene where Deniro beats down the man outside of the grocery store, you could tell that Deniro filmed his own stunt. Pretty impressive for a 76 year old man, but most men that age move a certain way. When Deniro was kicking the man on the curb, he was moving like an old man and holding out his arm for balance.
It kind of ruined the illusion that Deniro's character was supposed to be a younger man during the scene.

You should watch Godfather of Harlem. The latest episode contains a breakdown of exactly how the Kennedys betrayed the mob.

Uptown, Downtown, Switzerland
couple things I forgot to mention.

I didn't care for the scene with Frank on the phone to Hoffa's wife and Russ taking Franks shades before sending him to do the hit was a nice touch.
the small Joe Gallo arc was placed right at the right time...gave the movie a nice little jolt of energy.

I love how men wearing shorts has been a bugbear. first in The Sopranos and now in this.

also, Herc looked like something out of Guardians of The Galaxy or Bucky O'Hare...all that was missing was animal ears.

Been avoiding it because I saw Hoodlum and wasn't sure if it was more of the same, but I've been hearing great things. So I will check it out.
Hoodlum tells the story of Bumpy's rise to power, Godfather of Harlem shows Bumpy at his height. It's a very well-written show with a great cast and a dope soundtrack.
You're not too far behind, give it a binge watch.
