I think it feels like an end of an Era deliberately. The way it ends and particularly the last shot and line left me thinking this is scorcese telling both the story of the Irishman and his film career as it relates to mob movies.

that’s why he ended it by saying “don’t close the door all the way, leave it open a bit”

loved it.
I didn't expect anything to be anywhere close to Goodfellas or Casino but it way for them to all come together and cap it off.

Pesci was fantastic, Pacino was beautifully captivating, you could tell he was enjoying himself. even in the scene in his office where he veered into Pacino overacting mode he pulled it all in with one delightfully delivered line of "...I'm going to prison" and it made it worth it. De Niro was captain of the ship just the vehicle keeping everything moving.

wished Bobby Cannavalle had a bigger part. I would loved to have seen him have more scenes so he could flex his chops a bit in a way that Stephen Graham got to the chance to do with Pacino in a few scenes.

felt like the part of Salerno was just meant for Gandolfini.

weirdly proud of Action Bronson to be honest. to see him spit his first verse on Combat Jack to videos of him cooking in his kitchen to what he's done since then, this is a monumental moment for him.

how distracting were De Niro's eyes by the way ? looked like a White Walker at some point.

now that you've mentioned them, when I was watching The Joker they were the first I thought of when it came to who could've actually made a classic movie out of Phoenix's portrayal.

shame that Gandolfini & Liotta couldn't be/weren't in this

You can't blame "Captain Marvel" when the vast majority is not going to sit through something like "Parasite". Or this movie, for that matter.

Like it or not major movie chains are a business. They're only ever going to show the movies they feel the general public is interested in.

Relying on theater chains to show you good cinema would be like gauging the quality of music solely on mainstream radio. I suggest you start fukking with torrents.

Or just not live in a culturally backwater country like the US. :russ:

good movie...too fukkin long in some parts. They spend like 30 seconds showing how he started collecting bodies as a hitman...then spent 30 minutes showing him die after the damn climax of the movie. If you gonna make a long ass movie at least make it more interesting when you can

I have never watched Once Upon A Time in America? Is it worth watching? I loved The Irishman, Goodfellas, and Casino. Since I loved all three of those movies will I like Once Upon A Time in America?
Once Upon A TIme In America is an epic. I love it. Doesn't really compare to any of those movies though.

The issue is that it's a pain in the ass for a cinephile like myself who wants to see these smaller indie and foreign flicks. It sucks having to drive half an hour to the most expensive theater in the state since it's the only theater that plays the indie joints. if they get it at all. Or then I gotta wait like 5 months to rent it on digital. all to make room for captain marvel and other BS
I would have to go 1 or 2 hours for smaller films :sadcam:

Sometimes my local theater might get them a month later and show them for about a week if I'm lucky. We got Light House and Jo Jo Rabbit nearly a month later but still no Parasite :mjcry:

I think Martin Scorsese touched on that in that op-ed he wrote.

Well for better or worse this cultural backwater is where Scorsese wanted success and mainstream acceptance from....which is why he was lamenting the fact that comic movies hold considerable sway here.

It's not as if he said "well, America is a wash....but at least the Netherlands got my back."

Joker proved again that movies don't have to be big budget and CGI battles and family friendly to make a lot of money in the theater. It's more than "this is a business".. major studios are buying up screens to play their blockbusters and when they do that it leaves less room for smaller budget movies..

Tarantino has broken down those business practices.. especially PLF joints, IMAX, Dolby, etc.. all of these screens are bought.

It's like the music industry. The music industry for a long time.. radio play was bought and therefore that's what sold.. because the public doesn't hear what might be a better option unless they personally seek it out.

You cats gotta stop citing "Joker". It's obviously an anomaly. If it wasn't an anomaly, then it wouldn't matter if studios were buying screens because quality would win in the end.

I'm older than the vast majority of this board....most of you are looking at the past with rose tinted glasses. People in this thread talking about :damn: "why can't we go back to the days of movies like 'Goodfellas'!"....that shyt flopped. Did $43 million.
Meanwhile, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" did $201 million the same year.:mjlol:

So....yeah.

You cats complaining about mainstream cinema are basically vegans running up in McDonald's asking them to change their whole menu for you. It's not for you.

Again, use torrents. I'm not against mainstream cinema, but I damn sure don't use it as a yard stick for anything.

Lastly, :mjlol: at Quentin Tarantino. Dude is a part of the same machine he's complaining about. He was just upset it stopped working in his favor.

My point isn't about just The Irishman but cinema in general. We've got Bollywood and Chinese movies debuting in limited release simultaneously to their domestic release, we've got arthouse movies playing in every city and local theaters competing on arthouse cinema, some of them popular enough to stay in theaters for months. In Rotterdam alone Parasite plays in three theaters for a total of 14 screenings a day! The Irishman plays in two theaters with a total of six screenings a day. That shyt just don't compare, breh. :russ:

America in general is trash as fukk, I don't understand why people expect their local cinemaplex to be any different. It's mind boggling.

There's an Alamo like 15 minutes from me, it shows all kinds of shyt "traditional" chains won't touch. Between that and torrents I'm straight.

Would it be nice to see all these foreign movies on the big screen? Of course, but cats act like they either gotta watch "Antman 5" or wait 8 months for some random indie movie to hit streaming sites.
