The Darksaber is energy. But its like a Force users kyber crystal in a Lightsaber. One has to be in tuned with it or it rebels against the user becoming "heavier" and difficult to handle

I think it’s simply that the blade has a bond with its user.

Even with real weapons you have certain ways to wield knives, axes, or swords for maximum effect. You make a bunch of wild swings with an axe chopping wood you will tire yourself out vs using a strong stance and momentum.

Plus it's actually a good layer to his character that he was living with unfulfilled rage because he never got a chance to exact revenge on his father's killer. Surprised they never explored that like the books/comics did.
