It’s a preference on whether or not you prefer Steam or Windows but a lot of people seem to prefer Steam because of its simplicity.
As for emulation a SD is perfect for that too with Emudeck. It’s easy to install and comes built with almost every emulator you could want. You just have to get the roms.
I done got most of the shyt I wanted but I got some things on my wishlist, I haven't really looked at it yetwhat yall cop for the steam sale

I can vouch for the ROGs battery life being trash, I only really get like an hr of play time if im not plugged up.

For me the biggest advantage that the ROG has over the SD is that the ROG can play everything the SD can play and some of the newer games that the SD cannot. Also the ability to use Game Pass which is not too important but a nice option to have. That said, from what I've experienced with the ROG, a lot of games will require you playing with settings to get them to run decently so if you're not a fan of playing with settings, the SD might be better.What does the SD have that the ROG doesn’t, or vice versa?

I wouldn't say emulating on the ROG is difficult since it's just a PC in handheld form. You can install Emudeck or download and install the emulators individually. I have it setup on my ROG but I'm going to upgrade the SSD before I do anything else. You can also install Bazzite on it to turn it into an unofficial steam deck.Steam is more user friendly? The Ally X fixed the battery life majorly.
I'll say again, the Ally X is what the Ally should've been at launch.
