'Star Wars: Episode VII' is being shot in IMAX

After saying that Star Wars Episode VII would be shot on regular 35mm film instead of the larger, 70mm IMAX film, a new tweet from the production suggests the jumbo format has not been left out. A new post from Bad Robot's (director J.J.Abrams' production company) Twitter account shows an IMAX camera hoisted high above a sea of sand dunes, saying only "#bestformatever." Slashfilm confirmed with IMAX that the production was using the format, though it remains unclear whether it's only for certain parts of the film versus the entire feature.

IMAX's key benefit is its resolution, which is 10 times larger than 35mm film. That format was used in the original trilogy, while the later prequel trilogy ultimately relied on digital cameras that were 35mm equivalents in its final two films, and very much in their technological infancy.

The next film is set for a release on December 18, 2015, and will be followed by two sequels. Alongside those, Disney (which bought Lucasfilm two years ago), is planning a set of standalone films that will be origin stories for some of the characters in the canon. One of those is being helmed by Gareth Edwards, who directed the latest Godzilla reboot.

STAR WARS REBELS VILLAIN AGENT KALLUS REVEALED

David Oyelowo will voice the Imperial agent.

10 JUL 2014 BY ANTHONY COUTO

Having long been rumored to be involved with both Star Wars: Episode VII -- though that is still not confirmed -- and Star Wars Rebels, actor David Oyelowo (Lincoln, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) has now been officially announced as voicing a villain named Agent Kallus on the new animated series -- described as the Empire's ruthless enforcer and rebel hunter.

Agent Kallus is an officer of the Imperial Security Bureau (much akin to something like the FBI) whose job "is to basically make sure everyone stays loyal. And anyone who gives a whiff of disloyalty has to be cut out," says Oyelowo, "So, I guess you could safely say he's a bad guy."

Check out the video introducing Agent Kallus below:

Executive producer Dave Filoni says Kallus is a "rebel hunter" who is out to investigate any insurgency or start of a rebellion. "I don't know that Kallus would think that what he's doing is really evil," says Filoni, "He's just doing his job for the Empire, and he believes in the Empire."

The Star Wars Rebels creators promise that Kallus is an imposing physical threat, brought to life by what Lucasfilm's Carrie Beck calls "authoritative and very commanding and very cool" voice work from Oyelowo. The character is described by Filoni as "ambitious" and someone who wants to climb the ranks of the Empire. As a member of the Empire, Kallus is "on the ground" ordering stormtroopers in face-to-face combat, rather than commanding Star Destroyers.

Kallus sports a grey Imperial military uniform, a helmet for field missions, angled facial hair and a "modified version of Zeb's honor guard staff" -- the "muscle" of the rebels, who was already introduced at IGN.

Star Wars Rebels is set to debut this fall on Disney XD.

As the site points out, Chong tweeted out the following post in anticipation of the new Star Wars film awhile ago:

We don't know whether or not she was cast by that point -- so maybe she just likes Star Wars, okay?!

Chong was in the news this past week for being cast as the female lead in the upcoming Halo: Nightfall live-action digital feature from director Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (Falling Skies).

Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: Episode VII hits theatres on December 18, 2015.

NEW STAR WARS REBELS EXTENDED TRAILER

22 JUL 2014 BY ERIC GOLDMAN

As we head into San Diego Comic-Con, where the show will be represented by a panel and a special screening, Lucasfilm have released an extended new trailer for Star Wars Rebels.

Check out the trailer below, which confirms that there is at least a hologram appearance by a certain iconic Star Wars movie character...

Yep, that's Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Rebels trailer, via a recording made around 15 years before the series began, it seems, as the Republic fell. And that sure sounds likeJames Arnold Taylor, reprising his performance as Obi-Wan from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The Clone Wars' Dave Filoni is one of Rebels' executive producers, teaming with Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Greg Weisman (The Spectacular Spider-Man, Young Justice).
